as \u201cZatan the Column.\u201d Lupieri suggests in a footnote that \u201cZatan is Satan.\u201d The character in question is an ordinary human being, but a Mandaean author might well delight in the irony of having a character who is a Jewish leader named \u201cSatan.\u201d Mandaean texts delight in puns, and so\u00a0I suspected that there might be a pun in the Mandaic text, just as one finds \u201cBnia Amin\u201d (\u201cthe sons of Amen\u201d) instead of \u201cBenjamin.\u201d<\/p>\nZatan the Column is Zatan-`\u1e63\u1e6duna in Mandaic, and I could not think of a name that this might be a pun of. So I typed Zatanastuna into Google to see whether its automated correction facility might find a similar name.<\/p>\n
It suggested that perhaps I meant \u201cSatan as Tuna.\u201d Maybe Lupieri was on the right track\u2026<\/p>\n
