It is common to hear in sermons that tax collectors in Jesus\u2019 time<\/a> were hated because they worked for the Romans. In Jesus\u2019 time in Galilee<\/em>, however, we are still in the era of Herodian rule (in contrast with Judea, which was<\/em> under direct Roman rule by this time). So wouldn\u2019t individuals like Matthew\/Levi have collected Herod\u2019s taxes rather than Rome\u2019<\/a>s?<\/p>\n

You don\u2019t have to be collecting taxes<\/a> for foreign overlords in order to be unpopular, of course\u2026<\/p>\n
