{"id":34357,"date":"2016-06-03T18:16:08","date_gmt":"2016-06-03T22:16:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/religionprof\/?p=34357"},"modified":"2016-06-03T18:16:08","modified_gmt":"2016-06-03T22:16:08","slug":"gethseminary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/religionprof\/2016\/06\/gethseminary.html","title":{"rendered":"Gethseminary"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>For some reason, just as I was waking up one morning some weeks ago, I had the mash-up between \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/religionprof\/2014\/02\/gethsemane-updated.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Gethsemane<\/a>\u201d and \u201cseminary\u201d that is the title of this post pop into my head.<\/p>\n<p>And then I <a href=\"http:\/\/chronicle.com\/article\/The-Educational-Power-of\/236136\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">read a piece in the <em>Chronicle<\/em><\/a>\u00a0about the educational power of discomfort. It was\u00a0not specifically about seminaries, but about the struggles involved in learning and in being confronted with the challenges to our views and preconceptions that are part of anything worthy to be called \u201ceducation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And now I am visiting Israel with students.<\/p>\n<p>I hope that the\u00a0experiences that students have while visiting Israel \u2013 including some students who are seminary students and some who are not, and including\u00a0a visit to Gethsemane \u2013 will provide that kind of challenging discomfort that will lead to growth and learning.<\/p>\n<p>That will be my prayer, literally offered in the Garden of Gethsemane\u2026<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For some reason, just as I was waking up one morning some weeks ago, I had the mash-up between \u201cGethsemane\u201d and \u201cseminary\u201d that is the title of this post pop into my head.
