That claim is often justified by appeal to a passage that the Christians who make the claim, rather ironically, have misunderstood. By the end of the process of putting the post together, I found myself thinking that the relevant question is whether fundamentalists can understand the Bible. And it soon became clear that that question applies equally to Christian and anti-Christian fundamentalists.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"rnHxL7QHe9\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/keithgiles\/2019\/03\/christ-is-how-we-understand-scripture-not-the-other-way-around\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Christ Is How We Understand Scripture (Not The Other Way Around)<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"\u201cChrist Is How We Understand Scripture (Not The Other Way Around)\u201d \u2014 Keith Giles\" src=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/keithgiles\/2019\/03\/christ-is-how-we-understand-scripture-not-the-other-way-around\/embed\/#?secret=BkfFWsGMFZ#?secret=rnHxL7QHe9\" data-secret=\"rnHxL7QHe9\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>http:\/\/brucegerencser.net\/2016\/04\/non-christians-cant-understand-read-anyway\/<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.atheistrev.com\/2016\/07\/when-atheists-read-christian-bible.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">When atheists read the Christian Bible<\/a>.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/randalrauser.com\/2019\/06\/reflections-on-a-study-bible-for-atheists\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Randal Rauser wrote on that topic<\/a>: \u201cSadly, when it comes to the way atheists read the Bible, Shermer\u2019s attitude seems to be more the rule than the exception. The\u00a0<i>Skeptic\u2019s Annotated Study Bible\u00a0<\/i>claims to offer a reasonable and skeptical analysis of the biblical text. Fundamentalist Christians and the atheists who used to be them and are now in many instances fundamentalist atheists do agree fundamentally, pun intended. The idea that no interpretation is needed when dealing with an ancient text written in another language in a very different time and place is something that no one but a fundamentalist, whether religious or anti-religious, could contemplate saying and expect it to be taken seriously.
