This primary has been\u00a0fascinating, as someone who studies (among other things) the intersection of religion and the public sphere.<\/p>\n

Several candidates<\/a> confidently asserted<\/a> that God told them<\/a> to run for president. None of them are\u00a0continuing<\/a> their campaigns at this stage. And so we\u2019ve seen clear evidence yet again that political conservatives will happily try to use God to garner votes. Is the fact that\u00a0people didn\u2019t vote for them evidence that voters are wising up to such pandering? Or will all this be forgotten\u00a0in four years\u2019 time?<\/p>\n

We also have two of the least religious candidates in recent memory still in the running \u2013 Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders. I wonder whether Republicans who are religious will\u00a0prefer to support the devout United Methodist Hilary Clinton<\/a>, or will choose the at best extremely nominal<\/a>\u00a0Presbyterian<\/a> Donald Trump, whose own denomination is opposed to his words and policies<\/a>.<\/p>\n

And all the while, many are suggesting quite plausibly that the Jewish socialist is the \u201cmost Christian\u201d candidate in many respects.<\/p>\n

Whatever happens, it\u2019s a fascinating\u00a0testament to changing views on religion, economics, and politics in the United States.<\/p>\n
