And so be sure to keep clicking to the next page until you reach the end!

Let me start with the very final part of my trip to Italy, the last day before I flew back to the United States. I visited Rome again on the way back from the Enoch Seminar meeting in Camaldoli. I had planned to visit some of the catacombs in Rome with some of the other conference attendees, but a train strike prevented us from leaving Arezzo until 1pm. In the end, we scrapped that plan and went to our various hotels upon arriving in Rome, with a few of us arranging to meet up later for dinner.

I made a point of exploring places that I had not been to, and passing by a couple of places I had visited a week earlier as I traveled a different route through the historic center. I was glad I did, as I got to see the Colosseum and the Forum from another side. The view of the Forum from across the Circus Maximus gave a big picture angle on the site I had visited previously, and I got a photo of the Colosseum that included tourists inside who provide a clearer sense of the size of it.

I then made my way along the Tiber and across Tiber Island.

That takes you to the ghetto in which a papal decree in the 16th century forced Jews in Rome to live. One of the first signs that I had arrived was a proselytizing sign in Hebrew on a church, Santa Maria della Pietà.

Nearby there is an ancient theater, and a museum which used to by the community’s synagogue.

It was the Sabbath, and this is still a center of Jewish life in Rome, and so the museum and many other things were closed.

One thing that was not closed, however, was Nonna Betta, which styles itself as a “kosher style” restaurant. There I tried the famous dish carciofi alla giudìa (Jewish style artichoke) as well as fish Nonna Betta style with a side of spinach with pine nuts. It was all delicious, the wine was good, the service was good, and I highly recommend a visit there to anyone in Rome. As the souvenir magnet I bought there says, “hospitality is sacred.” And I loved the way they turned two rolling pins and a sheet of pasta dough into a simulated Torah scroll!

I dined there with two other scholars who were at the Enoch Seminar, Shayna Sheinfeld and Meredith Warren.

I am at present looking forward to reading Meredith’s book, My Flesh Is Meat Indeed: A Nonsacramental Reading of John 6:51-58.
