One of the mysteries that becomes more prominent in this season, but has been there from early on, is the whispers. They seem to accompany the movement of the Others, but also the manifestation of the island in the smoke monster or dead and missing individuals.

There have been several attempts to decipher the voices, and transcripts of the results have been posted.

The producers of LOST seem to know that die-hard fans will analyse, dissect, and disseminate information on the tiniest details of the show. And so one wonders whether the fact that the whispers consist of multiple overlapping tracks of voices is in fact significant, or just a means to produce the desired sound. Since the latter seems more likely, one explanation is that these are snippets of timelines and sounds of individuals moving through, around and outside of time. And the overlaps could suggest that, if it isn’t possible to change the future, or the past, it is possible to create alternative, parallel universes where something different happens.

It is a possibility physicists have explored, and it was well overdue for it to be turned into a TV show…

I’ve now watched into season 2 of LOST, up to the first episode I ever saw, if I remember correctly: “The Other 48 Days”.
