{"id":3587,"date":"2008-07-23T12:36:00","date_gmt":"2008-07-23T12:36:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/religionprof\/2008\/07\/what-is-an-atheist\/"},"modified":"2008-07-23T12:36:00","modified_gmt":"2008-07-23T12:36:00","slug":"what-is-an-atheist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/religionprof\/2008\/07\/what-is-an-atheist.html","title":{"rendered":"What is an Atheist?"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>It is certainly true that much contemporary discussion between (and about) atheists and religious believers suffers from the tendency to assume that \u201cGod\u201d means (and can only mean) one thing, usually the classic theism of Christianity as reduced into the understanding of popular Christianity today.<\/p>\n<p>Equally problematic, however, is a lack of clarity about what is meant by <em>atheism<\/em> and <em>atheist<\/em>. Does being an atheist mean one denies <em>theism<\/em>? If so, then one can be a deeply spiritual atheist, even a religious atheist. In fact, one can even be a <em>Christian<\/em> atheist. On the other hand, if atheism means one denies any notion of \u201cgod\u201d whatsoever, any form of religious belief, anything other than reductionist materialism, then I know many \u201catheists\u201d who will probably no longer be entirely comfortable bearing the label.<\/p>\n<p>So what does \u201catheist\u201d mean to you? And is the solution to the confusion simply to point out that just as \u201cChristian\u201d and \u201cGod\u201d do not refer to single positions, concepts or definitions, so too there are different brands of atheism, and different understandings of what it means to be an atheist?<\/p>\n<p>This post is largely a response to a post on EvolutionBlog entitled \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com\/evolutionblog\/2008\/07\/saving_religion_from_religion.php\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Saving Religion from Religion Scholars<\/a>\u201d (see also <a href=\"http:\/\/badidea.wordpress.com\/2008\/07\/22\/james-carse-yet-another-atheist-who-just-doesnt-get-atheism\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Bad Idea Blog<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/unreasonablefaith.com\/2008\/07\/23\/why-are-you-an-atheist-whats-your-story\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Unreasonable Faith<\/a>, as well as <a href=\"http:\/\/liberalpastor.blogspot.com\/2008\/07\/religion-versus-belief.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Liberal Pastor<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.energionpubs.com\/wordpress\/?p=1418\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Threads from Henry\u2019s Web<\/a>). I\u2019m not sure Jason Rosenhouse is concerned with saving religion from scholars so much as saving <em>atheism<\/em> from scholars like me who raise this issue about what it in fact means.
