If we are all mistaken on something so fundamental to the discipline, then how can it be assumed without investigation that the majority of us are correct on anything else?\u201d He also writes, \u201cThere are matters upon which informed persons can disagree. Then there are matters upon which disagreement indicates that at least one interlocutor is not qualified to be part of the discussion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There have been a number of interesting blog posts either about <a href=\"http:\/\/vincent-czyz.com\/?p=1406\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">mythicism<\/a> or relevant to it. The entire blog <a href=\"http:\/\/historyforatheists.blogspot.com\/2016\/09\/atheistically-speaking-podcast-on-jesus.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cHistory for Atheists\u201d<\/a> is focused on this topic (interacting, for instance, with <a href=\"http:\/\/historyforatheists.blogspot.com\/2016\/07\/richard-carrier-is-displeased.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Richard Carrier<\/a>). <a href=\"http:\/\/randalrauser.com\/2016\/06\/jesus-mythicism-reflections-on-the-worst-arguments-against-christianity-part-2\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Randal Rauser included mythicism on his list of some of the worst arguments against Christianity<\/a>. He also discussed <a href=\"http:\/\/randalrauser.com\/2016\/09\/no-evidence-unqualified-indefensible-claims-bad-apologists\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">the laughable claim that mythicists and young-earth creationists make that there is \u201cno evidence\u201d for the thing they dismiss<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/friendlyatheist\/2016\/07\/14\/dont-let-your-skepticism-get-carried-away\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Hemant Mehta<\/a> pointed out that skepticism can be taken too far.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/radicalchristianmillennial\/2016\/07\/the-historical-jesus-existed-its-time-to-move-on\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Christian Chiakulas<\/a> shared this image of a Facebook comment:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"blogsy-1469797187947.685\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-35375\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/exploringourmatrix\/files\/2016\/07\/mythicist-FB-comment-1-1024x167.jpg\" alt=\"mythicist-FB-comment-1\" width=\"1024\" height=\"167\"><\/p>\n<p>He commented, \u201cThese are the worst not just because of the infuriatingly smug, know-it-all attitude these armchair historians take, but because they are so painfully ignorant you wonder if they\u2019ve ever actually done any amount of reading on the subject.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/whyevolutionistrue.wordpress.com\/2016\/08\/29\/rosa-rubicondior-not-much-evidence-for-a-historical-jesus\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Jerry Coyne<\/a> nonetheless continues to embrace history denial while <a href=\"https:\/\/whyevolutionistrue.wordpress.com\/2016\/07\/29\/living-in-a-post-fact-world\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">complaining about science denial<\/a>. Bart Ehrman has heard enough <a href=\"https:\/\/atheologica.wordpress.com\/2016\/09\/06\/ehrman-errs-yes-bart-there-were-dying-rising-gods\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">mythicist claims<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 and spent enough time researching the historical figure of Jesus \u2013 that <a href=\"https:\/\/ehrmanblog.org\/debate-with-a-mythicist-and-the-book-of-revelation-readers-mailbag-september-25-2016\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">he doesn\u2019t need to do a lot of preparation for his debate with Robert Price<\/a>. I\u2019ll be interested to watch video of that event, but it scarcely seems worth driving to, since it is essentially <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eventbrite.com\/e\/mythinformation-conference-iii-feat-bart-d-ehrmandr-robert-price-debate-tickets-19701931006\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">an event for entertainment<\/a>. Academic questions aren\u2019t settled by these kinds of debates, but through painstaking careful study of the evidence and the achievement of consensus on that basis.<\/p>\n<p>Also of interest is that I came across another older book addressing mythicist claims made prior to 1916. It doesn\u2019t adopt the kind of approach that one might expect today, but it is still worth noting that many points that modern mythicists latch onto are not new, and neither are the responses that can be given to them.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: 0px;\" src=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=xpMwAAAAYAAJ&amp;dq=Gethsemane%20historicity&amp;pg=PA216&amp;output=embed\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jonathan Bernier noted in a recent post \u201cthe special pleading involved in rejecting a consensus position adopted by virtually every New Testament scholar (that Jesus existed) while accepting without reflection a consensus position adopted by most but hardly all such scholars.
