I had been thinking a lot lately, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/religionprof\/2016\/10\/setting-amos-hymn-fragments-to-music.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">you know<\/a>, about intersections between the Bible and music. But it struck me recently that one could do a <a href=\"http:\/\/thoughtsoffuturepasts.blogspot.com\/2016\/10\/music-and-religion-prognosis-yes-and.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">progressive rock<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2e7mYjU\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">concept album<\/a> exploring the major themes and topics in my course on religion and science fiction \u2013 the kinds of <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2f71cyG\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">topics explored in my recent book<\/a>\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2e7pFlf\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Theology and Science Fiction<\/a><\/em> as well.<\/p>\n<p>What kinds of topics? The question of whether a robot can be a person \u2013 there could be a song that explores it, told from the AI\u2019s perspective. (The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/religionprof\/2016\/10\/is-democracy-a-means-or-an-end.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">robot<\/a> could also be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/religionprof\/2016\/09\/would-you-vote-for-a-machine.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">running for president<\/a>, but maybe that should be a different song.) Doing mundane things \u2013 finding love, making tough choices \u2013 in a deep space and\/or distant future setting, or in a virtual reality.\u00a0Telling a tale of pilgrimage, leaving ambiguous whether the destination is a traditional sacred space or a sci-fi convention.<\/p>\n<p>But add to those too <a href=\"http:\/\/tcpc.blogs.com\/musings\/2016\/10\/the-psalms-of-donald.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">things that have been in the news lately<\/a>? <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theverge.com\/a\/luka-artificial-intelligence-memorial-roman-mazurenko-bot\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Trying to keep a dead loved one\u2019s presence with you through artificial intelligence<\/a>. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/10\/26\/us\/pentagon-artificial-intelligence-terminator.html?_r=0\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Programming\u00a0drones to kill<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.scientificamerican.com\/cross-check\/what-would-a-machine-as-smart-as-god-want\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cWhat would a machine as smart as God want?\u201d<\/a>\u00a0 There are more options than could fit even the double albums that prog rock embraced more than others.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/anxiousbench\/2016\/10\/the-vicars-poems\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Songs and poems have often played an important role in spreading a religious or philosophical message<\/a>. Couldn\u2019t it work as an exploration of\u00a0the points at which sci-fi and religion meet, in a way that entertains, informs, and encourages serious reflection? What do you think?
