<\/iframe>\n<\/p>As I was preparing to speak about Handel\u2019s Messiah recently, I came across a great description of what the Hallelujah Chorus is, stylistically speaking, in <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2hNFCPM\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Calvin Stapert\u2019s book<\/a> about the piece (p.135).<\/p>\nIt is a coronation anthem for Jesus.<\/p>\nI think that grasps the feel of the piece perfectly, and it is striking as well that Handel\u2019s coronation anthems, like so much of Messiah, draw heavily on the Psalms. Have a listen, in particular, to his coronation anthems for George II, composed 14 years before Messiah. Here is \u201cThe King Shall Rejoice\u201d:<\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=AoLR37u_iUQ\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=AoLR37u_iUQ<\/a>\nHere is\u00a0\u201cLet Thy Hand Be Strengthened\u201d:<\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=T3OUhWerCFY\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=T3OUhWerCFY<\/a>\nThe \u201cAlleluia\u201d section in both works makes for interesting comparisons, for obvious reasons. If you want one more from the set, here is \u201cMy Heart is\u00a0Inditing\u201d:<\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=GZ7cGnucGNU\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=GZ7cGnucGNU<\/a>\nThe first of the four coronation anthems, which I have not embedded here, is titled <a href=\"http:\/\/imslp.org\/wiki\/Zadok_the_Priest,_HWV_258_(Handel,_George_Frideric)\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cZadok the Priest.\u201d<\/a> I will need to include some of these pieces in my course on the Bible and music.
