<\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>So too is his Jacobsleiter (Jacob\u2019s Ladder):<\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Die Jakobsleiter \/ Arnold Schoenberg\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Y6Cd902hRQc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p>Both are fascinating works in terms of both their relationship to Schoenberg\u2019s developing artistic vision (often referred to, despite Schoenberg\u2019s objections, as \u201catonality\u201d) and his own religious views. I can\u2019t help but think that Schoenberg knew and intended as symbolic not only the opera Moses und Aron (even the spelling of Aaron\u2019s name was intentional and relates to numerology), but the leaving of it unfinished with the third and final act never scored, since the whole emphasis in the piece is the contrast between pure unutterable ideal, and image\/idol\/performance, and as it stands the piece delivers opposite messages about precisely this point depending on whether you read the score or attend a performance of the opera.
