He is certainly right that \u201cthere was no inn in the room\u201d. The word translated \u201cinn\u201d in many English versions of the story is translated \u201cupper room\u201d later in Luke, and is better translated \u201cguest room\u201d or \u201cextra room\u201d. The word for a commercial inn does appear in Luke\u2019s Gospel, in the only context where such an inn is appropriate \u2013 in the story of the \u2018good Samaritan\u2019. A Samaritan is just the sort of individual travelling in Judea who might use a commercial inn. Note how Paul the Apostle, travelling all across the Roman Empire, makes use of the hospitality network, as would be expected. He never tries to \u201ccheck into a hotel\u201d. Those interested in this subject should read Kenneth Bailey\u2019s classic study. The manger, rather than being \u201caround the back\u201d, was probably in the main room of the house where the animals would have been brought in at night. On the subject of whether Jesus was suspected to have been illegitimate, I\u2019ll simply point readers to <a href=\"http:\/\/exploringourmatrix.blogspot.com\/2007\/10\/jesus-illegitimacy-and-gospels.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">my article<\/a> on the subject in the <i>Journal for the Study of the Historical Jesus<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Theo Geek discusses whether <a href=\"http:\/\/theogeek.blogspot.com\/2007\/12\/pistis-christou-adjectival-genitive.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">pistis christou<\/a> is best translated \u201cfaith(fulness) <i>of<\/i> Christ\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/drjimwest.wordpress.com\/2007\/12\/09\/the-lost-tomb-hoax\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Jim West<\/a> has drawn attention to another <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uhl.ac\/blog\/?p=368\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">post on The View From Jerusalem<\/a> about the now infamous documentary on the Talpiot tomb. The <a href=\"http:\/\/jesusdynasty.com\/blog\/2007\/12\/09\/biblical-archaeology-and-academic-integrity\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Jesus Dynasty blog<\/a> has a different perspective to offer.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mysticalseeker.blogspot.com\/2007\/12\/does-belief-in-hell-make-one-evil.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Find And You Shall Seek<\/a> discusses an article in <i>Harper\u2019s<\/i> about belief in hell.<\/p>\n<p>Hypotyposeis continues to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hypotyposeis.org\/weblog\/2007\/12\/extra-generation-at-matt-111.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">explore the topic of Matthew\u2019s counting in his genealogy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Metacatholic discusses the topic of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.metacatholic.co.uk\/2007\/12\/the-educated-preacher-art-xxxv\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">educated preachers<\/a> in relation to the Church of England\u2019s 39 Articles. Kata Ta Biblia has a discussion of <a href=\"http:\/\/patmccullough.com\/2007\/12\/09\/sbl-reflections-anabaptists-and-nonviolent-atonement\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Anabaptists and nonviolent theories of the atonement<\/a>. The Lead shares a number of interesting pieces, including one on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.episcopalcafe.com\/lead\/faith_and_politics\/the_original_war_on_christmas.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Oliver Cromwell\u2019s \u201cwar on Christmas\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Someone shared a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.venganza.org\/2007\/12\/08\/whos-doing-the-demonizing.htm\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">link to a post of mine<\/a> in a comment at the <a href=\"http:\/\/exploringourmatrix.blogspot.com\/2007\/08\/tasty-revelations-with-cheese.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Flying Spaghetti Monster<\/a> (sauce and heapings of fresh basil be upon him) site.
