I\u2019ve created it as a photo journal of the event, not all in chronological order but thematically organized.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/religionprof\/2017\/08\/gamification-higher-education-gencon50-presentation.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">already shared highlights from Trade Day<\/a>, so I\u2019ll focus entirely on things that happened on other days here. Let me start with how fantastic it was meeting Jonathan Tweet for lunch, getting him to sign my copy of his book <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/religionprof\/2017\/08\/grandmother-fish.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Grandmother Fish<\/a><\/em>, seeing his card game <a href=\"http:\/\/www.grandmotherfish.com\/clades\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Clades<\/a>, talking with him about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/religionprof\/2017\/08\/historical-jesus-role-playing-game-jonathan-tweet-debates-richard-carrier.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">historical Jesus<\/a>, and about the Mandaeans, and about a range of other subjects of mutual interest.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-41647\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/719\/2017\/08\/Jonathan-Tweet-lunch.jpg\" alt=\"Jonathan Tweet lunch\" width=\"720\" height=\"960\"><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-41635\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/719\/2017\/08\/Clades.jpg\" alt=\"Clades\" width=\"666\" height=\"499\"><\/p>\n<p>Jonathan and I bumped into an owlbear, and so it was a photo opportunity that was not to be missed:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-41655\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/719\/2017\/08\/Owlbear.jpg\" alt=\"Owlbear\" width=\"720\" height=\"960\"><\/p>\n<p>Another conference attendee had apparently found the owlbear\u2019s baby\u2026<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-41633\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/719\/2017\/08\/Baby-Owlbear.jpg\" alt=\"Baby Owlbear\" width=\"720\" height=\"960\"><\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>Jonathan was one of the panelists at the retrospective looking back at the 3rd edition of Dungeons and Dragons, which saw a number of impressive and important revisions, and an incredible resurgence of interest in the famous role playing game.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-41638\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/719\/2017\/08\/DD-3e-retrospective-panel.jpg\" alt=\"D&amp;D 3e retrospective panel\" width=\"664\" height=\"498\"><\/p>\n<p>Much more of the history of Gen Con, D&amp;D, and role playing was to be seen in the Gen Con museum, located in Lucas Oil Stadium:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-41639\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/719\/2017\/08\/DD-Museum.jpg\" alt=\"D&amp;D Museum\" width=\"655\" height=\"491\"><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-41653\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/719\/2017\/08\/Museum-manuals.jpg\" alt=\"Museum manuals\" width=\"655\" height=\"492\"><\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>Jonathan\u2019s game Clades is not the only game that seeks to make it fun to learn about science. The following two photos will be of particular interest to my friends in chemistry and biology, as it features a number of items from Genius Games, makers of <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2vQ9gxM\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Covalence<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2fXIbU8\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Ion<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2vVdqTr\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Peptide<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-41637\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/719\/2017\/08\/Cytosis-at-Genius-Games.jpg\" alt=\"Cytosis at Genius Games\" width=\"643\" height=\"482\"><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-41646\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/719\/2017\/08\/Ion-Covalence.jpg\" alt=\"Ion Covalence\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\"><\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>There were a couple of real highlights that made a local connection. One was the stand for our Kurt Vonnegut Museum and Library here in Indianapolis.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-41650\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/719\/2017\/08\/Kurt-Vonnegut-Museum.jpg\" alt=\"Kurt Vonnegut Museum\" width=\"619\" height=\"464\"><\/p>\n<p>And then, looking at the game\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2vVp4O7\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Tesla vs. Edison<\/a>, I thought it was really cool to see that Madame C. J. Walker, for whom a theater in Indianapolis is named, but who was also a pioneering inventor an businesswoman, is included in the game:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-41651\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/719\/2017\/08\/Madame-Walker-in-Tesla-vs.-Edison.jpg\" alt=\"Madame Walker in Tesla vs. Edison\" width=\"621\" height=\"466\"><\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>There were a lot of cool t-shirts around \u2013 both for sale and being worn. I was tempted to buy some, but didn\u2019t want to deprive family, friends, and random blog readers from the opportunity to buy me one with <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2vQKm1g\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Admiral Ackbeer<\/a>, or the Essential NPC Player warning, or any of the others from <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2vQZuvp\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">OffWorld Designs<\/a>. It is incredibly detailed not only in the history that has been created for it, but also the <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2xh8o37\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">religious traditions<\/a> of the <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2vVtVij\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">RuneQuest<\/a> realm:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-41670\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/719\/2017\/08\/Orlanthi-Mythology.jpg\" alt=\"Orlanthi Mythology\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\"><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-41671\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/719\/2017\/08\/Solar-Court.jpg\" alt=\"Solar Court\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\"><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-41672\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/719\/2017\/08\/Guide-to-Glorantha.jpg\" alt=\"Guide to Glorantha\" width=\"480\" height=\"361\"><\/p>\n<p>These are a revival of an <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2iiGiBV\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">existing RPG mythos<\/a>, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chaosium.com\/the-guide-to-glorantha-slipcase-set\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">elaborating it in far greater depth and detail<\/a>. I will be reading some of the items that I got from their booth and then blogging about them in more detail in the near future.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>I was also on the lookout for games that might be of use in teaching. One that grabbed my interest was <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2vfDjM4\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Euphoria<\/a> (and its sequel <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2vVQROo\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Leaders of Euphoria<\/a>), which might be useful in my First Year Seminar class that explores utopias and dystopias.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-41642\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/719\/2017\/08\/Euphoria-Build-a-Better-Dystopia.jpg\" alt=\"Euphoria Build a Better Dystopia\" width=\"642\" height=\"481\"><\/p>\n<p>I was also on the lookout for dice for what may be my next game. In the process, I found a wide variety of dice that I wasn\u2019t looking for, but which were of interest to colleagues of mine who teach languages:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-41648\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/719\/2017\/08\/Koplow-dice-languages.jpg\" alt=\"Koplow dice languages\" width=\"684\" height=\"513\"><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-41649\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/719\/2017\/08\/Koplow-dice.jpg\" alt=\"Koplow dice\" width=\"678\" height=\"508\"><\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>There was also, of course, lots of cosplay. S. Lewis!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-41636\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/719\/2017\/08\/CS-Lewis.jpg\" alt=\"CS Lewis\" width=\"720\" height=\"960\"><\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>The Game Crafter didn\u2019t just hold events (including one at which Canon was played, and another at which I was introduced to <a href=\"http:\/\/roadtoinfamy.com\/bowties.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">the drinking game Bowties<\/a>), but also had a booth which was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegamecrafter.com\/game-upgrades\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">set up like a candy store<\/a>, including pieces that were designed specifically to upgrade and enhance existing games.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-41659\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/719\/2017\/08\/The-Game-Crafter.jpg\" alt=\"The Game Crafter\" width=\"618\" height=\"463\"><\/p>\n<p>I had my photo taken on <a href=\"https:\/\/dized.com\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Dized\u2019s<\/a> \u201cThrone of Games\u201d:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-41660\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/719\/2017\/08\/Throne-of-Games.jpg\" alt=\"Throne of Games\" width=\"610\" height=\"457\"><\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>One game that I played for the first time at Gen Con this year and loved so much that I ordered it is <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2vVeRRP\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Zertz<\/a> from <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2iibBga\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Rio Grande Games<\/a>. Here I am introducing my colleague Nick Johnson to the game:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-41665\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/719\/2017\/08\/Shiva-DD.jpg\" alt=\"Shiva D&amp;D\" width=\"635\" height=\"476\"><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2fWlXBS\" class=\" includes cards in the game that quote from Thucydides and other classical authors!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-41663\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/719\/2017\/08\/Antike-II.jpg\" alt=\"Antike II\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\"><\/p>\n<p>I imagine that psychology professors and others could do interesting things with the game <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2fXnwiU\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Hostage Negotiator<\/a>, which looks like it is fun as well as having the potential to be engaging in more serious ways.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-41645\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/719\/2017\/08\/Hostage-Negotiation.jpg\" alt=\"Hostage Negotiation\" width=\"599\" height=\"450\"><\/p>\n<p>The concept behind the <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2vfoMQr\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">TIME Stories<\/a> series reminds me of <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2fWJBOq\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Timeless<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-41662\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/719\/2017\/08\/TIME-Stories-Lumen-Fidei.jpg\" alt=\"TIME Stories Lumen Fidei\" width=\"720\" height=\"960\"><\/p>\n<p>Here are some more
