You have probably already heard the sad news that Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki has died<\/a>. Penderecki has set a number of biblical texts to music<\/a>. Here are his settings of some Psalms:<\/p>\n

<\/iframe><\/p>\nHere is his Dream of Jacob:<\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Krzysztof Penderecki - The Dream Of Jacob (1976)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/s8yzgpa_xSY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\nOther works also have biblical connections, such as his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/2015\/jun\/28\/rncm-symphony-orchestrapenderecki-review-a-biblical-maelstrom\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Symphony No.7 themed around seven gates of Jerusalem<\/a>.<\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/collections.libraries.indiana.edu\/lilly\/exhibitions\/exhibits\/show\/the-bible-through-music\/new-testament--gospels\/st--luke-passion\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Indiana University shares this commentary along with a glimpse of a manuscript of his St. Luke Passion in their holdings<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>Penderecki\u2019s\u00a0St. Luke Passion<\/em>\u00a0was commissioned to commemorate M\u00fcnster Cathedral\u2019s 700th<\/sup>\u00a0anniversary. The work premiered there on March 30, 1966. Though it was first performed in a church, Penderecki\u2019s\u00a0Passion,<\/em>\u00a0unlike Bach\u2019s, is considered concert music with no ties to religious observance. Also, the subject matter was meant to transcend a simple retelling of Christ\u2019s last days on earth. Though Penderecki was a religious man and in part sought to emphasize the literal retelling of Luke\u2019s Gospel narrative, he also aimed to symbolize the tragedy of humanity through Christ\u2019s suffering. This perspective makes sense when looking at Penderecki\u2019s other works, some of which focus on the horrors of Auschwitz and Hiroshima.<\/p>\nThe\u00a0St. Luke Passion<\/em>\u00a0covers slightly less ground than Bach\u2019s Matthew narrative. Penderecki\u2019s setting begins with Jesus on the Mount of Olives after the Last Supper and ends directly after Jesus\u2019 death. The text is in Latin. The work fluctuates between moments of near tonality and complete atonal chaos. Much of the music, though not explicitly tonal, does have a harmonic center. The score makes use of graphical and traditional notation, which can be seen in the section on display. Here, Penderecki creates a haunting moment, where Jesus dies after committing his spirit to God.
