Both talks were at the intersection of science fiction, ethics, law, and computer programming. In the first presentation we looked at the challenges of programming driverless cars through the lens of the Kobayashi Maru scenario from Star Trek. The second presentation looked at <a href=\"https:\/\/evolvingthoughts.net\/2018\/11\/23\/what-is-special-about-humans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\">what makes us human<\/a>, the challenges of making artificial persons such as androids, and other related issues, adopting what we called a \u201cData-driven approach\u201d (as in exploring the subject through the lens of Lt. Cmd. Data).<\/p>\n<p>You can listen to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/religionprof\/2018\/09\/religionprof-podcast-episode-2-featuring-ankur-gupta.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">two<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/religionprof\/2018\/10\/religionprof-podcast-episode-8-with-ankur-gupta-curation-filters-and-bubbles.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">episodes<\/a> of the ReligionProf Podcast that Ankur and I recorded if you are not already familiar with our project and want to find out more. There, Lisa Meece talked about how the event was almost cancelled, but fans intervened to prevent that from happening. One thing she said (related to Star Trek) was particularly striking and powerful: there are many fictional universes that we love, but few that we\u2019d want to live in.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-54705\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/719\/2018\/11\/47625122-1ECD-451E-900B-3D6675E16B28.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"576\"><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-54756\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/719\/2018\/11\/BD2E7996-73B8-406D-BDFD-D40E1E8B7C24.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"576\"><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-54762\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/719\/2018\/11\/DEC9A3BF-89FB-4FE2-B103-923262DA84F3-e1543107500481.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"768\"><\/p>\n<p>Both of our presentations, on Friday and Saturday, were extremely well received.
