{"id":457,"date":"2011-01-10T05:50:00","date_gmt":"2011-01-10T05:50:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/religionprof\/2011\/01\/the-tower-of-babel-as-satire\/"},"modified":"2011-01-10T05:50:00","modified_gmt":"2011-01-10T05:50:00","slug":"the-tower-of-babel-as-satire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/religionprof\/2011\/01\/the-tower-of-babel-as-satire.html","title":{"rendered":"The Tower of Babel as Satire"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both;text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.paideyg.ee\/kunstiajalugu\/kunstilugu\/mesopotaamia\/arhitektuur\/pilt\/5_etemenanki.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"145\" src=\"https:\/\/www.paideyg.ee\/kunstiajalugu\/kunstilugu\/mesopotaamia\/arhitektuur\/pilt\/5_etemenanki.jpg\" width=\"200\"><\/a><\/div>\n<p>A couple of posts about the Tower of Babel story have appeared in the blogosphere recently. <a href=\"http:\/\/wheatamongtares.blogspot.com\/2011\/01\/tower-of-babel-and-heavens-staircase.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Terri discussed telling her children that it is not literally true<\/a>, while <a href=\"http:\/\/thinkandwonderwonderandthink.blogspot.com\/2011\/01\/bible-says-what.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">DoOrDoNot shared a humorous story about a child being offered a possible literal interpretation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In the past I\u2019ve <a href=\"http:\/\/exploringourmatrix.blogspot.com\/2008\/09\/what-does-progressive-christian-believe.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">mentioned<\/a>\u00a0the story briefly, such as in <a href=\"http:\/\/exploringourmatrix.blogspot.com\/2007\/10\/linguistics-undermines-scriptural-truth.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">a parody of\u00a0the use of the story by young-earth creationists to oppose mainstream linguistics<\/a>, and also\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/exploringourmatrix.blogspot.com\/2010\/06\/subversive-sequels-in-bible.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">mentioned Judy Klitsner\u2019s treatment of the story<\/a> in her book\u00a0<i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Subversive-Sequels-Bible-Judy-Klitsner\/dp\/0827608888?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=jamefmcgrshom-20&amp;link_code=btl&amp;camp=213689&amp;creative=392969\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Subversive Sequels in the Bible<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" height=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=jamefmcgrshom-20&amp;l=btl&amp;camp=213689&amp;creative=392969&amp;o=1&amp;a=0827608888\" style=\"border: none !important;margin: 0px !important;padding: 0px !important\" width=\"1\"><\/i>. I was surprised to find that I\u2019ve never discussed it more directly or in more detail.<\/p>\n<p>The only thing I would add at present is that the story has a strong element of <i>satire<\/i>. It is poking fun at the Babylonians, reinterpreting the name of their capital city <a href=\"http:\/\/paleojudaica.blogspot.com\/2011_01_02_archive.html#1098246373821234695\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Babylon<\/a>\u00a0(turning the \u201cGate of God\u201d into \u201cconfusion\u201d), and offering an etiological story about their great <a href=\"http:\/\/thebiblicalworld.blogspot.com\/2011\/01\/tower-of-babel-disocvered.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">ziggurat<\/a>\u00a0Etemenanki \u2013 so grandiose was it that it is possible that they never managed to finish it, perhaps thus inspiring the story in Genesis.<\/p>\n<p>And related tangentially to the title of this post and the topic of this blog more generally, <a href=\"http:\/\/kristinswenson.com\/blog\/?p=377\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">the blog Bible Babel has a post on the Bible in the sci-fi series Firefly<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"blogger-post-footer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/tracker\/7622297540113836091-5615344035290507871?l=exploringourmatrix.blogspot.com\" alt=\"\"><\/div>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A couple of posts about the Tower of Babel story have appeared in the blogosphere recently.
