BELIEVER: I believe the Earth was created by giant Rock Ogres not too long ago. Since it\u2019s historical science, and not observational, my theory is just as valid as yours. More so, in fact, because I have a Holy Book the Rock Ogres wrote for mankind before leaving the Earth in their spaceship.<\/p>\n
SCIENTIST: In order for me to take that theory seriously, you would have to have some sort of evidence for Rock Ogres.<\/p>\n
BELIEVER: The Holy Book they wrote mentions them. They call themselves \u201cgiants,\u201d though.\u00a0 They\u2019re mentioned in other religious texts too.\u00a0 For example, the ancient Hebrews called them \u201cPhilistines.\u201d<\/p>\n
SCIENTIST: That\u2019s not scientific evidence.\u00a0 That\u2019s interesting historical evidence, that someone at some point wrote down, but we need real evidence.\u00a0 Scientific evidence might include something like a fossil record for these rock trolls\u2013<\/p>\n
BELIEVER: Rock Ogres.<\/p>\n
SCIENTIST: \u2013Rock Ogres, then. Maybe even some fossilized tracks.\u00a0 More importantly an actual specimen, or living descendant of the original Rock Ogres would be helpful so we could study its morphology.<\/p>\n
BELIEVER: They aren\u2019t around anymore. Like I said, they went up in their spaceship.\u00a0 Besides, they\u2019re eternal, so they didn\u2019t leave fossils behind. You can\u2019t prove they didn\u2019t exist, because all historical science is just conjectures and what-ifs.<\/p>\n
SCIENTIST: Did they leave any kind of imprint on the world they created?\u00a0 A signature perhaps?<\/p>\n
BELIEVER: Look at how complex everything is! You think all this stuff came from nothing?\u00a0 For R.O.\u2019s sake, open your eyes!<\/p>\n
SCIENTIST: The research that we\u2019ve done over many centuries has shown that all life shares common heritage, that is, it evolved\u2013<\/p>\n
BELIEVER: Oh please, now you\u2019re telling me that humans came from nothing.<\/p>\n
SCIENTIST: I didn\u2019t say we came from nothing, I said we evolved from\u2013<\/p>\n
BELIEVER: Right, but you follow that line of reasoning, and you have to admit that all life came from nothing.\u00a0 What did the first cell come from?\u00a0 And how did it become so complex?\u00a0 I find it MUCH easier to believe Rock Ogres created this complexity than that it all just happened by random chance.<\/p>\n
SCIENTIST: That\u2019s fine if you want to believe that, but in order to make it a valid scientific theory, you have to show some evidence\u2013<\/p>\n
BELIEVER: What evidence do YOU have? It all happened in the past, so you can\u2019t prove anything.\u00a0 It\u2019s not evidence if it can\u2019t be tested in a lab.<\/p>\n
SCIENTIST: Well, there\u2019s no way to test if the ancient Roman civilization ever existed by testing it in a lab, but we have plenty of evidence that it did.<\/p>\n
BELIEVER: Right, I agree with that kind of evidence.<\/p>\n
SCIENTIST: Then why don\u2019t you agree with the scientific evidence for evolution?<\/p>\n
