We are continuing to work on that, to be sure \u2013 and I would be remiss if I didn\u2019t mention the <a href=\"https:\/\/philevents.org\/event\/show\/66154\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">call for abstracts for contributions to a volume about the ethics of autonomous vehicles<\/a>. The deadline is coming up in November. It is also the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41562-017-0202-6\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">focus of one of several articles<\/a> in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/collections\/csgqqsrfxh?utm_campaign=natmachintell_usg_machineintellcollection2018_nrrj_eu&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=clarivate\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Nature<\/em> special feature about machine intelligence<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Here in <a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/religionprof-podcast\/id1434490182?mt=2&amp;uo=4\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">this podcast episode<\/a>, however, we explore (among other things) whether and in what ways machine intelligence might provide a useful service in bursting our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.premierchristianity.com\/Blog\/Why-your-Bible-App-s-verse-of-the-day-feature-could-be-skewing-your-view-of-God\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">bubbles that we create by surrounding ourselves with like-minded voices<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The need for and inevitability of filtering when it comes to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bigdatanews.datasciencecentral.com\/profiles\/blogs\/black-hat-data-science-what-it-is-and-when-to-use-it\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">information<\/a> that flows our way is not something that we talk about often enough, much less theorize about. And so I was happy to read a treatment of this topic in <a href=\"http:\/\/firstmonday.org\/ojs\/index.php\/fm\/article\/view\/9409\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">the\u00a0<em>First Monday<\/em> interview with Felix Stalder about the digital transformation of our world<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Filtering is necessary, otherwise we drown in information\u2026The problem here is not filtering itself, but the unaccountability and concentration of power that goes along with it. Therefore, we should not call for \u201cneutral\u201d or \u201cobjective\u201d filters. That\u2019s an oxymoron. Rather, we need to create mechanism of accountability (like we had for editorial decisions) and we need to counter the monopoly tendencies. So, rather than having only one filter, we need to be able to compare different filters and thus see how they work. We cannot judge the filtered against the unfiltered view, we can only judge results of one filter against those of another one.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>See also what <a href=\"https:\/\/newhumanist.org.uk\/articles\/5358\/time-to-log-off\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Giovanni Tiso wrote in <i>New Humanist<\/i><\/a> recently \u2013 here\u2019s a pull quote:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It makes little sense to delete Facebook and walk away from one of the principal mediums for the dissemination of information about the world. We must understand and challenge its power instead.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>See too the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetechedvocate.org\/3-myths-of-using-digital-tools-in-the-higher-education-classroom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\">Matthew Lynch\u2019s piece about AI and education<\/a>, in which he wrote:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Good professors will never become obsolete. Students may be digital natives, but they still must be taught how to construct knowledge for themselves and navigate higher education. The best professors care about us and inspire us to do our best. And that will never go out of style. However, there are tremendous opportunities for artificial intelligence and professors to work in tandem to help students reach their potentials.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Autonomy-Quest-Driverless-Car-Reshape\/dp\/0062661124\/ref=as_li_ss_il?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1538058173&amp;sr=1-1&amp;keywords=autonomy&amp;linkCode=li2&amp;tag=jamefmcgrshom-20&amp;linkId=d7fde944ed5b9683a18461dec4133dac&amp;language=en_US\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"\/\/ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/widgets\/q?_encoding=UTF8&amp;ASIN=0062661124&amp;Format=_SL160_&amp;ID=AsinImage&amp;MarketPlace=US&amp;ServiceVersion=20070822&amp;WS=1&amp;tag=jamefmcgrshom-20&amp;language=en_US\" border=\"0\"><\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" src=\"https:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=jamefmcgrshom-20&amp;language=en_US&amp;l=li2&amp;o=1&amp;a=0062661124\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.psephizo.com\/life-ministry\/does-theology-help-makes-sense-of-artificial-intelligence\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Ian Paul shared<\/a> his appearance on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rte.ie\/radio1\/the-leap-of-faith\/programmes\/2018\/0928\/998812-the-leap-of-faith-friday-28-september-2018\/?clipid=102938584#102938584\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">the radio show\u00a0<em>The Leap of Faith<\/em><\/a>\u00a0talking about AI, ethics, and theology. <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/worried-about-ai-taking-over-the-world-you-may-be-making-some-rather-unscientific-assumptions-103561\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Eleni Vaskilaki<\/a> argued that much fear of AI is based on unscientific assumptions about its capacities.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/blogs\/technology-and-learning\/autonomy-and-slow-electric-self-driving-car-revolution\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Inside Higher Ed<\/em> reviewed<\/a> the new book about driverless cars,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2pKWgWn\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Autonomy<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>See too <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2018\/sep\/08\/joseph-stiglitz-on-artificial-intelligence-were-going-towards-a-more-divided-society\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Ian Sample\u2019s interview with Joseph Stiglitz<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.socialcooling.com\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Social Cooling website<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/technology-44561838\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">BBC article on a man who was fired by a machine<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/50-000-las-vegas-workers-are-ready-to-go-on-strike-over-1826474028\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">article about workers in Las Vegas who went on strike because they are afraid of losing their jobs to robots<\/a>, as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1843magazine.com\/technology\/what-just-happened\/whod-want-to-be-friends-with-a-robot\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">IBM\u2019s work on a robot that can debate with a human<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/blogs\/technology-and-learning\/alternative-human-machine-narrative-future-work\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">the need to reimagine work in the era of AI<\/a>. In this future, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/views\/2018\/09\/18\/need-sell-higher-education-real-and-there-should-be-no-shame-opinion\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Liberal Arts become more and not less important<\/a>, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.studyinternational.com\/news\/op-ed-if-you-want-to-maximise-your-employability-study-liberal-arts\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">more than one recent article has emphasized<\/a>. See for instance <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/blogs\/just-visiting\/future-work\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">John Warner\u2019s piece on the future of work<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/blogs\/confessions-community-college-dean\/driverless-cars-and-directionless-politics\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Matt Reed\u2019s in which he wrote about AI and investment in higher education<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The economy has not rendered the classic liberal arts irrelevant.\u00a0 It has made them more important than ever. Fifty years from now, there may or may not still be community colleges.\u00a0 But there will absolutely still be a need for an intelligent, engaged citizenry that can control its own destiny.
