{"id":5455,"date":"2012-01-03T09:14:13","date_gmt":"2012-01-03T14:14:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/religionprof\/?p=5455"},"modified":"2012-01-03T09:14:13","modified_gmt":"2012-01-03T14:14:13","slug":"doctor-who-arc-of-infinity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/religionprof\/2012\/01\/doctor-who-arc-of-infinity.html","title":{"rendered":"Doctor Who: Arc of Infinity"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/29.media.tumblr.com\/tumblr_lscue54bTx1qbtlzco5_250.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"189\">The Doctor Who episode \u201cArc of Infinity\u201d is well-known among fans for several reasons, perhaps most of all because it witnessed the first appearance of Colin Baker on the show \u2013 not yet as the sixth Doctor, but as the Gallifreyan commander of the chancellery\u00a0guard, Maxil.<\/p>\n<p>Colin Baker was only one of many such instances during the show\u2019s history: Nicholas Courtney, Lalla Ward and Karen Gillan being other actors and actresses who appeared on the show for a role in an individual episode, and then returned to play a main character. Colin Baker is, however, the only one to return to play the Doctor \u2013 so far.<\/p>\n<p>If you had to pick an actor (or actress) who previously appeared on the show to play the Doctor in the future, who would you choose, and why?<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.flickfilosopher.com\/flickfilos\/art\/doctorwho\/doctorroom11.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"235\" height=\"132\">Rather than discuss the details of the episode \u2013 which has some great elements, and some not so great ones that presumably reflect the state of special effects more than anything else (why would the breakdown of a magnetic containment field around a person made of antimatter cause them to slowly turn greenish and gross?) \u2013 let me highlight one detail that might relate to a more recent episode,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickfilosopher.com\/blog\/2011\/09\/doctor_who_blogging_the_god_co.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"> \u201cThe God Complex.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>When the time comes for the Doctor to be executed on Gallifrey, something that marks a rare but not unprecedented act for the time lords in that period, we hear a somber alarm that announces the occurrence, and it sounds much like the cloister bell in the TARDIS.<\/p>\n<p>Could that be what the Doctor heard in his room? If so, what would it signify? Fear of death \u2013 not in the sense of death leading to regeneration, but fear of extinction? Fear of his inability to get his own people off of a course towards callousness and murder? Fear of Omega? Something else? And who is the \u201cwho\u201d that represents it in the room?<\/p>\n<p>It may be that there is no connection. But given the efforts the Doctor put into avoiding his own seemingly inevitable death at the end of the last season, I wonder whether the sound in his room in <a href=\"http:\/\/scifitvnerd.blogspot.com\/2011\/09\/doctor-who-god-complex.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cThe God Complex\u201d<\/a> might not have been drawn from \u201cArc of Infinity\u201d rather than it being the TARDIS\u2019 warning alarm.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-dXlhq8WSRoU\/TnV9a5fPiOI\/AAAAAAAAAn0\/__GISdEafEs\/s1600\/god+complex+11.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"582\" height=\"319\"><\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Doctor Who episode \u201cArc of Infinity\u201d is well-known among fans for several reasons, perhaps most of all because it witnessed the first appearance of Colin Baker on the show \u2013 not yet as the sixth Doctor, but as the Gallifreyan commander of the chancellery\u00a0guard, Maxil.
