Students are different, and learn differently.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/image1.masterfile.com\/getImage\/NjAwLTAxMTEyMzE4bi4wMDAwMDAwMA=AHaFAe\/600-01112318n.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"133\" src=\"https:\/\/image1.masterfile.com\/getImage\/NjAwLTAxMTEyMzE4bi4wMDAwMDAwMA=AHaFAe\/600-01112318n.jpg\" width=\"200\"><\/a>Then again, if participation grades penalize the silent contemplative learner, removing them could be interpreted as penalizing those students who create vibrant class discussions that everyone benefits from, but do less well in other aspects of coursework.<\/p>\n<p>Here are <a href=\"http:\/\/writingishard.wordpress.com\/2010\/05\/17\/five-reasons-to-stop-giving-participation-grades\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">two<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/derekbruff.com\/site\/blog\/2010\/09\/28\/a-case-against-class-participation-grades-negating-and-remaking-social-contracts\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">other<\/a> blogs presenting arguments against participation grades.<\/p>\n<p>In the past I\u2019ve also tried offering \u201calternative\u201d forms of participation to count towards this part of the grade, such as posting on a discussion board.<\/p>\n<p>What do others think? I\u2019m interested in hearing from students and professors.
