{"id":5739,"date":"2012-01-12T22:56:18","date_gmt":"2012-01-13T03:56:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/religionprof\/?p=5739"},"modified":"2012-01-12T22:56:18","modified_gmt":"2012-01-13T03:56:18","slug":"the-lords-prayer-in-indiana-public-schools","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/religionprof\/2012\/01\/the-lords-prayer-in-indiana-public-schools.html","title":{"rendered":"The Lord&#8217;s Prayer in Indiana Public Schools?"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/religionprof\/2011\/12\/creationist-legislation-in-indiana.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">As if the news of attempts to get creationism into science classrooms were not bad enough<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/freethoughtblogs.com\/blaghag\/2012\/01\/more-religious-legislation-from-indiana\/?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+freethoughtblogs%2Fblaghag+%28FTB%3A+Blag+Hag%29&amp;utm_content=Google+Reader\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">there is another proposed law that seeks to allow schools to mandate the recitation of the Lord\u2019s prayer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.in.gov\/legislative\/bills\/2012\/IN\/IN0251.1.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Here\u2019s the text of Senate Bill 251<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Sec. 4.6. (a) In order that each student recognize the importance of spiritual development in establishing character and becoming a good citizen, the governing body of a school corporation or the equivalent authority of a charter school may require the recitation of the Lord\u2019s Prayer at the beginning of each school day. The prayer may be recited by a teacher, a student, or the class of students.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>(b) If the governing body or equivalent authority requires the recitation of the Lord\u2019s Prayer under subsection (a), the governing body or equivalent authority shall determine the version of the Lord\u2019s Prayer that will be recited in the school corporation or charter school.<\/p>\n<p>(c) A student is exempt from participation in the prayer if:<\/p>\n<p>(1) the student chooses not to participate; or<\/p>\n<p>(2) the student\u2019s parent chooses to have the student not<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This is clearly unconstitutional. But even if it weren\u2019t, why would anyone want to put students from non-Christian traditions in the position of being bullied and made fun of for not participating in such rituals?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/slacktivist\/2012\/01\/12\/freedom-is-often-most-delicious-when-it-is-extended\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">But this should be an issue even for Christians<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/religionprof\/2007\/11\/hail-mary-news-from-the-future.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">All it would take is for someone to propose allowing prayers from other traditions \u2013 even another Christian one, say the<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/religionprof\/2007\/11\/hail-mary-news-from-the-future.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Hail Mary<\/a> \u2013 for this sort of thing to suddenly become controversial among Christians. But of course, in our diverse society, one might ask why we couldn\u2019t see something <a href=\"http:\/\/turoks.net\/Cabana\/ChildrenPullOutYourChickens.php\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">along the lines of the short story \u201cChildren, Pull Out Your Chickens\u201d<\/a> or what is depicted in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/friendlyatheist\/2012\/01\/12\/those-republicans-in-indiana-would-be-fine-with-this-righ\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Hemant Mehta\u2019s cartoon<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/friendlyatheist\/files\/2012\/01\/Zeus.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"445\"><\/p>\n<p>We should avoid having anyone dictate to children to pray something specific in schools. Public schools are places where common values and generally accepted knowledge are conveyed to children, not sectarian viewpoints of any sort.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/maddowblog.msnbc.msn.com\/_news\/2012\/01\/11\/10100687-this-is-what-theocracy-looks-like\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Laura Conaway posted on this at the Maddow Blog, and unfortunately brought that infamous bogus supposed translation of the Lord\u2019s Prayer into the discussion<\/a>. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thenazareneway.com\/lords_prayer.htm\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">It is in fact an English prayer with <em>no relationship<\/em> to anything in the Aramaic version of the prayer<\/a>. I\u2019ll gladly post on this separately if there is interest.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/robertcargill.com\/2012\/01\/11\/on-public-prayer\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Let me close by offering one more subtle reason why Christians ought to be opposed to this sort of thing, from Bob Cargill<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/bobcargill.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/01\/tbow_matt_6-6.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"395\"><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/friendlyatheist\/2012\/01\/12\/memo-to-indiana-republicans-reciting-the-lords-prayer-in-school-wont-make-students-better-citizens\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">There are good Christian reasons to be opposed to this legislation<\/a>. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.in.gov\/legislative\/contact\/index.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Time to contact our legislators again<\/a>\u2026<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As if the news of attempts to get creationism into science classrooms were not bad enough, there is another proposed law that seeks to allow schools to mandate the recitation of the Lord\u2019s prayer.
