This semester, my freshman seminar course \u201cFaith, Doubt and Reason\u201d focuses on utopias, dystopias<\/a>, and the quest for community<\/a> and a just society<\/a>. Since we start tomorrow, the day after Martin Luther King Day, I moved the readings<\/a> \u2013 in fact, viewings \u2013 up to the very first day of class.<\/p>\n Most people are familiar with one snippet of the \u201cI have a dream<\/a>\u201d speech and the \u201cI\u2019ve been to the mountaintop<\/a>\u201d speech \u2013 or perhaps they would be better referred to as sermons<\/em><\/a>. Some have<\/a> read both in their entirety<\/a>. But there is something to be gained by actually listening to the words spoken by their author and delivered as he intended. I hope it may turn the \u201csound bite\u201d into something they can contextualize into a real life, struggle, and context.<\/a> Not that sound bites from King are bad \u2013 often even a few words from him contain amazing power and insight<\/a>.<\/p>\n
