{"id":58939,"date":"2019-09-14T04:57:26","date_gmt":"2019-09-14T08:57:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/religionprof\/?p=58939"},"modified":"2019-09-02T14:27:13","modified_gmt":"2019-09-02T18:27:13","slug":"god-as-parent","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/religionprof\/2019\/09\/god-as-parent.html","title":{"rendered":"God as Parent"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>To the extent that the point of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nakedpastorstore.com\/blogs\/news\/spiritual-growth-can-hurt\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">this cartoon by David Hayward<\/a> is that spiritual growth hurts, I agree \u2013 it can hurt.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-58945\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/719\/2019\/02\/Spiritual-Growth-Can-Hurt.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\"><\/p>\n<p>Surely that is the reason why many prefer to remain immature, not merely childlike (which can be positive) but childish. Spiritual growth, like any growth, is a painful process.<\/p>\n<p>However, I suspect I am not the only one who also has qualms about the depiction of God kicking someone off a cliff.<\/p>\n<p>That, I think, is part of the challenge theology faces when it comes to <a href=\"https:\/\/randalrauser.com\/2019\/03\/the-problem-of-evil-and-biblical-violence-a-conversation-with-an-exvangelical\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">theodicy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If a human parent were to make things deliberately difficult for their child, we might well accuse them of child abuse rather than fostering spiritual development. And yet some degree of \u201cthrowing them in the deep end\u201d is acceptable pedagogy when teaching a child to swim. Indeed, we sometimes cause harm and long-term challenges to our children both when we fail to provide support and protection they need, and when we provide too much. And so it is no wonder that we struggle with relating this to our ideas about God.<\/p>\n<p>How much of the problem is in our anthropomorphism, our depiction of God in human terms? How much is due to the things we depict God as doing?
