Even more than other film genres, science fiction movies confront viewers with\u00a0societal problems and make experimentation with other models possible. Science fiction can thus be connected to explorations of religion, faith, and belief.\u00a0Does a machine (a robot, a computer, an android, or a ship) have a soul?\u00a0What about the concepts of determinism and free will, the bounds between\u00a0faith, magic, and experimentation? How do films deal with God and the figure\u00a0of the saviour, or with prophets, priests, imams, and rabbis? How can ideas of\u00a0time travel and the afterlife be linked with religious beliefs? How can science be\u00a0related to faith? What about notions of the future? Why are angels and demons\u00a0and concepts of good and evil (related to theodicy) so popular in science fiction\u00a0movies? What is the significance of fictional forms of religion and what is their\u00a0link to theocracies and dystopian universes?<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
This issue of\u00a0JRFM\u00a0analyses and examines these questions by focusing on\u00a0science fiction in films and TV-series, including both historical and contemporary case studies. It extends the concept of science fiction by also considering\u00a0fantasy productions. Interdisciplinary approaches to the relationship between\u00a0religion and science fiction are particularly welcome. The issue also has an open section for articles on any topic linked to the profile of\u00a0JRFM. Contributions focusing on the use of media in teaching religion\u00a0and\/or discussing the role of media in transmitting academic knowledge in religious studies are particularly welcome.<\/div>\n

The deadline for submission is 30 June 2019. Contributions of 25,000\u201330,000<\/div>\n
characters (including spaces) should be submitted online for peer review\u00a0through the journal homepage, www.jrfm.eu<\/a>. We kindly ask authors to register. Publication is scheduled for May 2020.
