A trip to the Dead Sea is an option. I took a tour through Mike\u2019s Center, which I had already heard of and was considering, and just happened across yesterday when I was leaving the Church of the Holy Sepulcher.<\/p>\n<p>The first stop was Qumran, and although there was an introductory film, it jumped right in with a fictional tale of a person\u2019s life there, including the assumption that John the Baptist had spent some time there. Since we were lacking a tour guide, I did the honors, and so I can now add Qumran tour guide to the list of things I have done, if only once in an unofficial capacity.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/56238954@N05\/5869504131\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3010\/5869504131_77631305a7.jpg\" border=\"0\" width=\"281\" height=\"210\" style=\"margin:5px\"><\/a><br>Our second stop was Masada, taking the cable car up and then walking back down. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/56238954@N05\/5869504417\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5141\/5869504417_463343897c.jpg\" border=\"0\" width=\"281\" height=\"210\" style=\"margin:5px\"><\/a><br>It is an amazing place, with so many indications of Herod\u2019s intention that it serve as a place of luxury, even though it is perhaps more famous for having been the final holdout of the first Jewish war against Rome.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/56238954@N05\/5870062622\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3263\/5870062622_e679cf49f5.jpg\" border=\"0\" width=\"281\" height=\"210\" style=\"margin:5px\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/56238954@N05\/5870062872\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5183\/5870062872_eec26e6aef.jpg\" border=\"0\" width=\"210\" height=\"281\" style=\"margin:5px\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/56238954@N05\/5870063122\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3123\/5870063122_43af260ab1.jpg\" border=\"0\" width=\"210\" height=\"281\" style=\"margin:5px\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/56238954@N05\/5870063470\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3121\/5870063470_fa4db0114f.jpg\" border=\"0\" width=\"281\" height=\"210\" style=\"margin:5px\"><\/a><br>Some struggled with the walk down the difficult Snake Path, a rocky winding descent. But then spending some time floating in the Dead Sea refreshed us (I think I can safely speak for the others who were on the me tour with me).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/56238954@N05\/5870063688\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3032\/5870063688_54b6c1061d.jpg\" border=\"0\" width=\"281\" height=\"210\" style=\"margin:5px\"><\/a><br>After that we went to Jericho, where I had a delicious lunch at the Temptation Restaurant (an all-you-can-eat buffet of Middle Eastern food), visited a sycamore tree allegedly climbed by Zaccheus, and finally Tel es-Sultan, the occupation mound of historic Jericho, whose walls came tumbling down, even if it had nothing to do with Joshua or invading Israelites.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/56238954@N05\/5869506027\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5153\/5869506027_4f3859d94c.jpg\" border=\"0\" width=\"210\" height=\"281\" style=\"margin:5px\"><\/a><br>\nIt was strange to be thrown in suddenly to the situation of tour guide, but since I am here with a view to bringing students, it was a useful dry run!<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What can one do when in Jerusalem on the Sabbath, assuming that one is not observing the sabbath oneself (or at least not strictly)?
