{"id":69168,"date":"2019-09-07T04:56:12","date_gmt":"2019-09-07T08:56:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/religionprof\/?p=69168"},"modified":"2019-09-02T09:28:39","modified_gmt":"2019-09-02T13:28:39","slug":"ursula-niebuhr","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/religionprof\/2019\/09\/ursula-niebuhr.html","title":{"rendered":"Ursula Niebuhr"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>I wonder how many scholars, including everyone from feminists to old-fashioned male chauvinist defenders of patriarchy, aren\u2019t even aware of the scarcely-acknowledged contributions women in general and wives in particular have made to some of the best-known works in their fields.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/feminismandreligion.com\/2019\/08\/26\/ursula-niebuhr-ursula-niebuhr-unacknowledged-co-author-of-great-works-of-theologyby-carol-p-christ\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\">recent blog post by Carol Christ<\/a> offers one example. She writes:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I found Rebekah Miles\u2019 article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.christiancentury.org\/article\/2012-01\/uncredited\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cWas Ursula Niebuhr Reinhold\u2019s Coauthor?\u201d<\/a> Miles suggests that after Reinhold\u2019s stroke in 1952, it is probable that Ursula played a large role in the production of his later works. Ursula\u2019s daughter agrees\u2013with the caveat that her\u00a0 mother played a major role in all of her father\u2019s books. Ursula\u2019s contribution was acknowledged by Reinhold in his 1965 book, <em>Man\u2019s Nature and His Communities\u2026<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Definitely read the rest of <a href=\"https:\/\/feminismandreligion.com\/2019\/08\/26\/ursula-niebuhr-ursula-niebuhr-unacknowledged-co-author-of-great-works-of-theologyby-carol-p-christ\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\">the blog post<\/a>, as well as the article it mentions.<\/p>\n<p>As I continue working (even now as the academic year begins!) on my book on what Jesus learned from women, I couldn\u2019t help but notice the resonance between the that project and this blog post. Women who wanted to be rabbis in the past married one. Women who wanted to become authors pretended to be men or became the muse of a man.<\/p>\n<p>Where might we detect that unacknowledged contribution in the Gospels?
