{"id":7533,"date":"2012-04-25T11:15:55","date_gmt":"2012-04-25T15:15:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/religionprof\/?p=7533"},"modified":"2012-04-25T11:15:55","modified_gmt":"2012-04-25T15:15:55","slug":"the-work-of-bibliobloggers-gets-its-due","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/religionprof\/2012\/04\/the-work-of-bibliobloggers-gets-its-due.html","title":{"rendered":"The Work Of Bibliobloggers Gets Its Due"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/IfYQJX\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Bibliobloggers have finally made it into the big league, getting a mention on the front page of the <em>New York Times<\/em> (click through to see it in full context)<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-7534\" href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/religionprof\/2012\/04\/the-work-of-bibliobloggers-gets-its-due.html\/newsjack\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7534\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/exploringourmatrix\/files\/2012\/04\/Newsjack.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"505\" height=\"672\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/IfYQJX\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Please click through and see the page itself to verify its authenticity before reading further<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Now that I\u2019ve put some of you in shock and made others skeptical but curious, I can now set your mind at ease. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.poynter.org\/latest-news\/regret-the-error\/171467\/newsjack-launches-to-let-you-hijack-news-websites\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The above (including the page you arrive at by following the link) is an example of <em>Newsjacking<\/em><\/a> which <a href=\"http:\/\/www.skeptic.com\/doubtful-news\/website-allows-you-to-easily-hijack-news-websites\/?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+Skepticcom+%28Skeptic.com%29&amp;utm_content=Google+Reader\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">I learned about today via <em>Skeptic<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It has been possible for a long time to manipulate images and text to create fake news items. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.snopes.com\/politics\/medical\/microchip.asp\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Indeed, a relative contacted me on Facebook yesterday concerned about rumors that Americans would soon be required to have microchips implanted<\/a>. The claim drew selectively on actual proposed legislation, weaving it with a popular but dubious interpretation of Revelation to create panic.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/newsjack.in\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Newsjack simply takes that to the next level, offering a site that facilitates doing that sort of thing<\/a>, making it incredibly easy and quick.<\/p>\n<p>In a sense, this is probably a good thing. By making it so easy to create spoof news, I am hopeful that it will become common knowledge that one has to fact-check claims, even ones that seem to be in newspapers or on news web sites.<\/p>\n<p>For the benefit of those who came here hoping for actual news about bibliobloggers addressing claims made in various media outlets, let me <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonstaples.com\/blog\/2012\/talpiot-tomb-b-on-connected-and-unconnected-lines-2791?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+jasonstaples+%28jasonstaples.com%29&amp;utm_content=Google+Reader\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">share the latest from Jason Staples<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/ntweblog.blogspot.com\/2012\/04\/returning-once-again-to-names-in.html?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+MarkGoodacresNTBlog+%28Mark+Goodacre%27s+NT+Blog%29&amp;utm_content=Google+Reader\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Mark Goodacre<\/a> on the inscription and names on ossuaries in the Talpiot tombs.
