Indeed, like so many classic episodes, it may be <em>better<\/em> as an audiobook, since the special effects of this period were even at their best disappointing compared to one is presently possible.<\/p>\n<p>In this episode, Zoe is introduced, and she and Jamie will remain the Second Doctor\u2019s companions until the time lords send them back to their own times and places in \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B002IW62FU\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=jamefmcgrshom-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B002IW62FU\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The War Games<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important;margin: 0px !important\" src=\"https:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=jamefmcgrshom-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=B002IW62FU\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\">.\u201d Zoe is a prodigy whose head has been \u201cpumped full of facts and figures\u201d \u2013 not through technology but by a \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.doctorwhoreviews.co.uk\/SS.htm\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">parapsychology unit<\/a>,\u201d allowing her to be of particular use as a librarian, research assistant and\u00a0adviser\u00a0on the space station that gives the episode its title. Her logic and knowledge provide an opportunity for discussion of the relative value of logic and information versus \u201ccommon sense.\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/doctorwho\/classic\/episodeguide\/wheelinspace\/detail.shtml\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Here\u2019s perhaps the most relevant snippet of dialogue<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Zoe : \u201cYou can\u2019t disprove the facts. It\u2019s pure logic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Doctor : \u201cLogic, my dear Zoe, merely enables one to be wrong with authority.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Jarvis, the captain of the station, has trouble handling the crisis in which they find themselves, because he doesn\u2019t accept explanations outside of the laws of physics. In the context of the episode, this narrow outlook (including his disbelief in ESP) is viewed negatively. The relationship of logic and knowledge to science, explanation, wisdom, and common sense are explored, and so the episode can also provide an excellent starting point for discussing how all of the above may or may not relate to religion.<\/p>\n<p>This is the first episode where the Doctor is referred to as \u201cDoctor John Smith.\u201d It is Jamie who comes up with the alias.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/en\/thumb\/1\/1c\/Wheel_in_Space.jpg\/250px-Wheel_in_Space.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"208\"><\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The episode The Wheel in Space is an excellent dramatic adventure, unfortunately not surviving in its entirety, but thoroughly enjoyable as an audiobook.
