It is worthwhile reflecting not only on why we view our own suffering as \u201cunprecedented\u201d when it is not, and also how those before us have handled their similar crises.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2020\/03\/30\/what-our-contagion-fables-are-really-about\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>The New Yorker<\/em> has an interesting article on \u201cWhat Our Contagion Fables are Really About.\u201d<\/a> Here\u2019s a quote from it:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A plague is like a lobotomy. It cuts away the higher realms, the loftiest capacities of humanity, and leaves only the animal.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It includes significant attention to <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2x3Rx9C\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Mary Shelley\u2019s story <em>The Last Man<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0The Book of Revelation (at the very least its interpretation and application, if not in the context of its composition) is also relevant. As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/04\/02\/us\/coronavirus-apocalypse-religion.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">one article in the\u00a0<em>New York Times<\/em>\u00a0says<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"css-exrw3m evys1bk0\">The crisis is revealing health care inequalities, class divisions and the fact that the most important workers in American society are among the least paid, said Jorge Juan Rodr\u00edguez V, a doctoral candidate in the history of religion at Union Theological Seminary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-exrw3m evys1bk0\">\u201cWhat is being revealed are the fault lines in the system that always existed,\u201d he said. \u201cWe are just noticing it now because the system is stressed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-exrw3m evys1bk0\">About 44 percent of likely voters in the United States see the coronavirus pandemic and economic meltdown as either a wake-up call to faith, a sign of God\u2019s coming judgment or both, according to a poll commissioned by the Joshua Fund, an evangelical group run by Joel C. Rosenberg, who writes about the end of the world, and conducted last week by McLaughlin &amp; Associates, pollsters for President Trump and other Republicans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-exrw3m evys1bk0\">David Jeremiah, a pastor who has been one of President Trump\u2019s informal evangelical advisers, asked in a sermon recently if the coronavirus was biblical prophecy, and called the pandemic \u201cthe most apocalyptic thing that has ever happened to us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-exrw3m evys1bk0\">Among Christians, one of the most well-known apocalyptic narratives is the Book of Revelation in the New Testament, which tells the story of the defeat of an evil beast, a final divine judgment and the coming of a New Jerusalem.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-exrw3m evys1bk0\">While many biblical scholars read the book as a story about the destruction of corrupt political systems, many evangelical Christians believe it describes the rapture, Jesus\u2019 return to save believers from a period of tribulation.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cMost apocalyptic\u201d is not inherently different from, and not more apt than, \u201cunprecedented.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.christiancentury.org\/article\/opinion\/coronavirus-pandemic-exposing-myth-self-reliance\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Christian Century<\/em><\/a> also has an article on how the pandemic is exposing self-reliance as a myth.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/slate.com\/culture\/2020\/03\/edgar-allan-poes-masque-of-the-red-death-is-an-allegory-for-the-age-of-coronavirus.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Edgar Allan Poe\u2019s \u201cMasque of the Red Death\u201d<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/guide-to-the-classics-albert-camus-the-plague-134244\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Albert Camus\u2019<\/a>\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/thepatrologist.com\/2020\/04\/06\/reflections-upon-camus-the-plague-i\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Plague<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>have also been mentioned.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere on this topic see:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nymag.com\/intelligencer\/2020\/04\/did-my-fundamentalist-upbringing-prepare-me-for-coronavirus.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">On bring prepared by a fundamentalist upbringing for the Coronavirus<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"Lhn0DBCtUe\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/feminismandreligion.com\/2020\/04\/05\/not-if-but-when-by-barbara-ardinger\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cNot If But When\u201d by Barbara\u00a0Ardinger<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute;
