{"id":81067,"date":"2020-08-16T05:14:28","date_gmt":"2020-08-16T09:14:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/religionprof\/?p=81067"},"modified":"2020-08-11T14:57:16","modified_gmt":"2020-08-11T18:57:16","slug":"cfp-critical-approaches-to-horror-in-doctor-who-chapters-sought","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/religionprof\/2020\/08\/cfp-critical-approaches-to-horror-in-doctor-who-chapters-sought.html","title":{"rendered":"#CFP Critical Approaches to Horror in Doctor Who &#8211; Chapters Sought"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>Although\u00a0<em>Doctor Who\u00a0<\/em>creator Sydney Newman wanted his show to be educational and avoid so-called \u201cbug-eyed monsters,\u201d the popularity of the Daleks in the second serial ensured that it would be better known for scaring kids into hiding behind the sofa.\u00a0 Adaptable as the science-fiction program is to fit a variety of other genres (e.g. the Western, screwball comedy, romance, period drama), horror dominates its cultural memory and ongoing practice.\u00a0 While there have been some critical essays over the years examining this aspect of the show, no book has been devoted to a more sustained examination of the generic work of horror in\u00a0<em>Doctor Who.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>This edited collection will remedy that absence.<\/p>\n<p>More specifically, this book will serve as a thoughtful examination of the ways\u00a0<em>Doctor Who<\/em>\u00a0operates\u00a0<strong>in the horror genre<\/strong>, in its complication of generic definitions, its ideological work, and its relation to fandom.\u00a0 Emerging and advanced scholars are invited to submit chapters exploring broadly an aspect of horror in classic and\/or modern\u00a0<em>Doctor Who<\/em>,as well as in-depth examinations of particular episodes. I am especially interested in having the following subtopics and\/or episodes represented within the collection but welcome submissions on other matters as well:<\/p>\n<p>Body horror<\/p>\n<p>Fear of technology<\/p>\n<p>Fan experience (hiding behind the sofa, etc.)<\/p>\n<p>Folk horror<\/p>\n<p>Possession stories<\/p>\n<p>Gothic horror<\/p>\n<p>Ecohorror<\/p>\n<p>The monstrous feminine<\/p>\n<p>Vampires, werewolves, mummies<\/p>\n<p>Zombies<\/p>\n<p>Recurring monsters (Daleks, Cybermen, Weeping Angels, etc.)<\/p>\n<p>Pastiches of classic horror films<\/p>\n<p>Influence on the horror film tradition<\/p>\n<p>Alien invasion narratives<\/p>\n<p>The Terrible Child<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTerror of the Autons\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Daemons\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Green Death\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Ark in Space\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPyramids of Mars\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Seeds of Doom\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Robots of Death\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Talons of Weng-Chiang\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHorror of Fang Rock\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKinda\u201d\/\u201cSnakedance\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGhost Light\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBlink\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMidnight\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNight Terrors\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe God Complex\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cListen\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMummy on the Orient Express\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHeaven Sent\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOxygen\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Haunting of Villa Diodati\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Please submit abstracts of approximately 500 words along with a brief bio to Robert F.
