Ross Douthat and the Future of Denominations and Christianity"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>Late yesterday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/religionprof\/2012\/07\/ross-douthat-is-a-fruit-fly-and-other-responses-around-the-blogosphere.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">I posted a round-up of links on this topic<\/a>, and already there are enough for <a href=\"http:\/\/bismarcktribune.com\/news\/columnists\/can-liberal-christianity-be-saved\/article_1e6106f2-cf57-11e1-9147-0019bb2963f4.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">another<\/a>, just on <a href=\"http:\/\/donrogers.org\/?p=2332\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">blogs<\/a> to which I subscribe!<\/p>\n<p>First, let me mention that <a href=\"http:\/\/douthat.blogs.nytimes.com\/2012\/07\/16\/what-is-liberal-christianity\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Ross Douthat himself has written a follow-up piece, \u201cWhat Is Liberal Christianity?\u201d<\/a>\u00a0In it his primary conversation partner is <a href=\"http:\/\/shoredfragments.wordpress.com\/2012\/07\/15\/defining-liberal-christianity\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Steven Holmes, a British Baptist who wrote a response to Douthat\u2019s initial piece<\/a>\u00a0in which he addressed this issue of defining Liberal Christianity. <a href=\"http:\/\/shoredfragments.wordpress.com\/2012\/07\/16\/divided-by-a-common-language\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Holmes has now responded to Douthat, tempering his passion in the interest of Anglo-American mutual comprehension across our linguistic divide<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.religiondispatches.org\/archive\/atheologies\/6189\/the_episcopal_church_%E2%80%98takes_a_flying_leap%E2%80%99_into_controversies_old_and_new_%C2%A0\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Elizabeth Drescher provided a good overview of the key topics at the Episcopal General Convention which has sparked all this discussion<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/kenschenck.blogspot.com\/2012\/07\/liberal-dying.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/freelancepastor.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/03\/church-for-sale.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"204\" height=\"138\">Ken Schenck asks what the relationship is between truth and popularity<\/a>. Likewise <a href=\"http:\/\/www.progressiveinvolvement.com\/progressive_involvement\/2012\/07\/our-so-called-decline.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">the blog Progressive Involvement notes the different interpretations conservatives offer when Liberal churches decline and when their own conservative ones do<\/a>. The piece is worth reading all the way to the end, since the last line packs quite a punch. <a href=\"http:\/\/morganguyton.wordpress.com\/2012\/07\/17\/thoughts-on-the-alleged-demise-of-liberal-christianity\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Morgan Guyton also emphasized that churches decline in attendance for a variety of reasons, some good, some bad<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thebiblicalworld.blogspot.com\/2012\/07\/between-rock-and-hard-place-neither.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">John Byron joins Rachel Held Evans as another voice that feels caught between the two extremes<\/a>. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.episcopalcafe.com\/lead\/general_convention_2012_live\/cant_we_all_just_get_along.html?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+episcopalcafe%2Flead+%28The+Lead%29&amp;utm_content=Google+Reader\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Lead also chimed in on this conversation<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.internetmonk.com\/archive\/follow-up-on-the-conservativeprogressive-discussion-with-rachel-evans\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">as did Internet Monk<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/akma.disseminary.org\/?p=3476\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">AKMA offers many thoughts, including that simply improving preaching would do wonders for many churches<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonmonthly.com\/political-animal-a\/2012_07\/straw_crosses038627.php\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Ed Kilgore has some sharp words for Ross Douthat<\/a>, including the following:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/onemonthofwisdom.com\/wisdomblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/church-for-sale.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"180\" height=\"124\">It never seems to occur to religious \u201ctraditionalists\u201d like Ross Douthat that an equally grave charge could be aimed at Christian conservatives who are in perpetual danger of confusing worship of Jesus Christ with such entirely secular preoccupations as maintaining economic privileges and mid-twentieth-century ideas of family structure and sexual morality\u2014not to mention the worldly interests of the Church itself.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, instead of lecturing \u201cliberal Christians\u201d about our alleged lack of serious spirituality and advising us on how to put more posteriors in the pews and more money in the coffers, perhaps Ross Douthat should spend his time proctoring conservative Christians who attend churches he actually knows something about, and whose growing tendency to conflate the Gospels with the agenda of the American conservative movement and the Republican Party could use some critical attention.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.religiondispatches.org\/dispatches\/sarahmoricebrubaker\/6187\/for_douthat%2C_church_either_uncompromising_or_a_secular_den_of_promiscuity_and_irrelevance\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Sarah Morice Brubaker calls shenanigans and offers a parable<\/a>. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.christiancentury.org\/blogs\/archive\/2012-07\/morice-brubaker-takes-douthat\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">This is Steve Thorngate\u2019s favorite response to Douthat<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/slacktivist\/2012\/07\/17\/suburban-is-not-the-same-as-theologically-conservative\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Fred Clark clarifies that \u201csuburban\u201d is not the same as \u201ctheologically conservative.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0He also has a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/slacktivist\/2012\/07\/17\/can-liberal-christianity-be-saved-or-how-rudolph-bultmann-is-killing-the-city-of-detroit\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">very good post which asks whether Rudolf Bultmann is killing Detroit<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/christianpiatt\/2012\/07\/helping-churches-die-right\/?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+ChristianPiatt+%28Christian+Piatt%27s+Blog%29&amp;utm_content=Google+Reader\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Christian Piatt blogged about helping churches die right<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/nearemmaus.com\/2012\/07\/17\/more-on-the-future-of-christian-denominations\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Brian LePort offers another round-up<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Late yesterday I posted a round-up of links on this topic, and already there are enough for another, just on blogs to which I subscribe!
