{"id":8726,"date":"2012-08-04T08:50:21","date_gmt":"2012-08-04T12:50:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/religionprof\/?p=8726"},"modified":"2012-08-04T08:50:21","modified_gmt":"2012-08-04T12:50:21","slug":"did-jesus-understand-genesis-2-literally","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/religionprof\/2012\/08\/did-jesus-understand-genesis-2-literally.html","title":{"rendered":"Did Jesus Understand Genesis 2 Literally?"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>Many will point to Jesus' words about divorce, in the context of which he quotes Genesis 2, as evidence that Jesus believed Adam and Eve were literal people, and will then on that basis argue against modern biology, or claim this proves that he supported the view of marriage as involving only one man and one woman.<\/p>\n<p>The evidence does not support the claim that Jesus took that text literally, but in fact, suggests precisely the opposite.<\/p>\n<p>Here's the passage from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Mark+10&amp;version=NIV\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Mark 10<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Some Pharisees came and tested him by asking, \u201cIs it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/religionprof\/?attachment_id=8727\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8727\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/exploringourmatrix\/files\/2012\/08\/image007.jpg\" class=\"alignright wp-image-8727\" width=\"207\" height=\"190\" alt=\"\"><\/a>\u201cWhat did Moses command you?\u201d he replied.<\/p>\n<p>They said, \u201cMoses permitted a man to write a certificate of divorce and send her away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was because your hearts were hard that Moses wrote you this law,\u201dJesus replied. \u201cBut at the beginning of creation God \u2018made them male and female.\u2019 <sup> <\/sup>\u2018For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife,<sup> <\/sup>and the two will become one flesh.\u2019 So they are no longer two, but one flesh.<sup> <\/sup>Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Note what Jesus actually says. \u201cWhat God has joined together.\u201d Not \u201cWhat God has split from one to make two. The <a href=\"http:\/\/bible.cc\/genesis\/2-24.htm\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">text Jesus quotes in Genesis<\/a> encourages such a metaphorical or symbolic reading, when it says that the two <em>become<\/em> one flesh. In the story, the characters literally are one flesh \u2013 no becoming is required.
