The use of a linen shroud may suggest that it was possible to be buried even more dishonorably \u2013 but not much\u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/biu.academia.edu\/NahumBenYehuda\/Papers\/181160\/Shrouds-for-the-Deceased---in-Talmudic-Literature\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Nahum ben Yehuda has a collection of rabbinic references to burial shrouds<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>A new <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bibleinterp.com\/articles\/burial357907.shtml#sdfootnote17sym\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">article in <em>The Bible and Interpretation<\/em> by Eldad Keynan<\/a> (HT <a href=\"http:\/\/zwingliusredivivus.wordpress.com\/2010\/10\/07\/eldad-keynans-fascinating-piece-on-burial\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Jim West<\/a>) the customs of Jewish burial in the time of Jesus are explained. In addition, we get the important information that \u201cthe tomb beneath the Holy Sepulcher has no niches but only a shelf, and it is smaller compared to regular family tombs.\u201d This leads Keynan to suggest that this was probably the site used by the Jerusalem court for burial of criminals. It was used for preliminary burial, not being intended for final burial.<\/p>\n<p>It is striking that the traditional site for the burial of Jesus<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" height=\"1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=jamefmcgrshom-20&amp;l=btl&amp;camp=213689&amp;creative=392969&amp;o=1&amp;a=1439210179\" style=\"border-bottom: medium none;border-left: medium none;border-right: medium none;border-top: medium none;margin: 0px;padding-bottom: 0px !important;padding-left: 0px !important;padding-right: 0px !important;padding-top: 0px !important\" width=\"1\"> (hidden for a while by a temple of Aphrodite) and the details of Mark\u2019s Gospel (obscured or even contradicted by later authors) converge in agreement on this point. <br>\u00a0 <br>[Many of you already know my <a href=\"http:\/\/burialofjesus.blogspot.com\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">longstanding interest<\/a> in this topic.
