We would like to invite you to an online workshop entitled:<\/p>\n

Jewish Authors and Power in the Graeco-Roman Period<\/strong><\/p>\n

The workshop will take place via zoom on June 3rd- 4th 2021 14:00-18:00 CET<\/p>\n

The workshop is organized by the Institut f\u00fcr Judaistik, Universit\u00e4t
\nBern in collaboration with CoE Ancient Near Eastern Empires,
\nUniversity of Helsinki.<\/p>\n

Questions regarding power and power relations have been a prominent
\ntopic in the study of the Greco-Roman period and especially regarding
\nthe complicated and eventful history of Judaism in this period.
\nWhether relating to the use of power by ruling empires or the
\nresistance to it by local populations, scholarship has often focused
\non forms of \u2018physical\u2019 power like state violence and the extortion of
\nrevenue from subjugated populations. The adoption of post-colonial
\nperspectives by scholars of antiquity and Jewish Studies changed this
\ntrend and brought with it new studies on forms of \u2018soft\u2019 power and the
\nways in which subaltern groups employed it. While undoubtedly a
\nwelcome development, some contemporary studies are too quick to apply
\ncontemporary concepts and circumstances to the ancient world. In this
\nworkshop, we wish to turn our look to the ancient evidence and to the
\nways in which (mainly) Jewish authors describe and establish notions
\nof power. In the Greco-Roman period, and throughout the Mediterranean
\nand the Near East, different communities encountered new and changing
\nforms of dominance and had to respond to them by rethinking old
\nconcepts and formulating new ones. We ask: How do the authors define
\npower, or do they define it at all? How is power described,
\nestablished and negotiated in (and between?) texts? How do the authors
\nperceive power, how does it affect their writings and form their texts
\n(implicitly or explicitly)? How is power tangible in character
\ndepictions, virtues, moral and social standards? Do the authors pursue
\nan inside, for example Rome centered, view or rather an outside one?
\nAre there any limitations to power or alternative sources to it? Can
\nwe detect notions of power balance or attempts to create such a
\nbalance?<\/p>\n

We aim to bring together students of the Greco-Roman world with
\ndifferent points of view on the centrality and importance of
\nHellenistic and Roman empires and their impact on the Mediterranean
\nand Near Eastern authors for a discussion of the matter.<\/p>\n
