I grew up in rather fundamentalist Christian circles which had me inherit a worldview <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">that<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> elevated the stories of scripture well above the lived experience <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">those of us living in the modern world<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">. It was as if God only worked in and moved through ancient spaces. But<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> as time progressed, I began seeing God <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">alive <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">in <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">my own narrative: <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">W<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">hen, while living in my car, someone gave me a<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> key <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">so as to<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> shower in their<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">new home. W<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">hen, after accidentally<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">, and quite publicly, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">disrespecting a teacher in high school, they displayed the item which had caused them so much pain<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> in their classroom<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">,<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">long <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">after I <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">had graduated<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">. When, while exhausted after a long day in the mountains, my <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">climbing partner<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> tirelessly cheered me on until <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">I<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> reached <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">the safety of our car<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">. It was these <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">and many other <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">stories from my own life which led me to write <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s6\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Only Love. <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Because<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> if <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">God moves in the world now,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> I think it means that<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> our stories matter. As in your and my experiences are just as important as the experiences of those recorded in scripture\u2014how love interacts and intersects with you and your life is just as valuable as how love interacted and intersected with ancient authors of millennia ago. <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">And <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">so<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> t<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">he narratives <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">I\u2019ve shared in the book are ones which <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">have helped frame who and what God is for me, and <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">it has been my hope that<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> they may do the same for<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> those who read it<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">. Sometimes we give <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">a<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> collection of ancient texts far more weight than we really ought. Jesus even goes so far as to bash those who think they have found God in the academic exercise of studying scripture. I think he saw the holy collection as a launching pad through which we can ground our own holy experience\u2014not something which we worship as <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">god<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s4\"><strong><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">W<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">ho are some of the thinkers that have influenced you?<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"s7\"><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">I\u2019m indebted, as we all are, to a great number of people who have <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">greatly impacted my worldview without their ever knowing it<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u2014many <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">of whom<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> I\u2019ve never met or who have already passed<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">. They <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">include:<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Abraham Joshua Heschel<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> for his<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> work on the God-human connection.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Bren\u00e9<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> Brown<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> for her scholarship on vulnerability and courage.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Diana Butler Bass<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">for her <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">longstanding efforts to articulate that <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">what <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">often seems<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> to be a decline<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> in religious practice in the west is instead a <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">transformation in how <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">people think about<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> God<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">. <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Greg Boyd, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">particularly for his recent work dealing with <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">the <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">violence attributed to God in the Hebrew Bible. <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Mahatma Gandhi<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> for his staunch nonviolent rhetoric.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Martin Luther King Jr <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">for his socio<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">political<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> ideals a<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">nd dedication to liberation as a theological lynchpin.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> As well as <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Richard Rohr<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">, for his <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">beautiful prose\u2014nobody writes a book quite like Rohr<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> They have all taught <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">me from afar what God looks like up <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">close<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">; and my own voice is deeply bound to theirs.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s4\"><strong><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">What do you feel was your <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">biggest unexpected<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> discovery or \u201caha moment\u201d when writing?<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"s4\"><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">I suppose<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> the biggest \u201caha\u201d moment<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> I had <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">centered around how, up until my writing this book, I had <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">always thought of God\u2019s love as something which was kept in check<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">, or even overshadowed<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> by God\u2019s power. But when researching for the book, all the while digging deep into my own story, I came to find God\u2019s power as being <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">situated squarely within <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">God\u2019s <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">love. <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">As in<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">, at least in my present persuasion,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> God is all-powerful in <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">that <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">the love that God <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">is can do<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> most anything.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">While for <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">many folks<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">, this may just be semantics, the distinction<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> here<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> is important. <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">The former view allows for God to operate outside of what I articulate as being God\u2019s character (<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">i.e.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> love), meaning that God can be less than wholly good. Whereas the latter view has God\u2019s power <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">necessarily bound by the parameters of love itself<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">, meaning that God would then operate, as the book\u2019s title suggests, as only love.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> This distinction changed everything for me and, subsequently, for the book.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s4\"><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"><b>What three things do you think would persuade readers of my blog that your book is one they should get, whether for themselves or as a gift for others (or both)?<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"s9\"><span class=\"s8\">1) <\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">First, t<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">he multitude of<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> stories <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">in <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s6\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Only Love<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> are intended to be accessible to a wide swath of people\u2014<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">and <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">it\u2019s <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">their coupling with narratives and reasoning drawn from scripture which makes the book unique.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> There is <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">even a Christmas story<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> tucked in<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> for the present season<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">!<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"s9\"><span class=\"s8\">2) <\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Also, t<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">here<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> i<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">s no way to objectively know if the t<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">heology <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">espoused in my book (or, frankly, any other <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">book or work<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">) is \u201cright.\u201d <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Because of this<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> uncertainty<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">, I worked to frame <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">God as being of the highest and most complete good\u2014which, frankly, is the most encouraging portrait of the divine I think can be articulate<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">d<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"s9\"><span class=\"s8\">3) <\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Lastly, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">that way of seeing God as wholly good lends itself to modern social transformation. Because, if we\u2019re to take seriously the image-bearing nature of humanity in scripture, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">how we think about God lends itself <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">towards seeing each other as only love too.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<p>If <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/32fQbIu\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Only Love<\/em><\/a> sounds like the kind of book you and\/or a friend or family member would enjoy reading there is still time to get it for Christmas.
