<\/a>Presumably everyone<\/a> has<\/a> heard<\/a> by now that a group of \u201cChristians<\/a>\u201d in Florida is planning a Qur\u2019an-burning<\/a> event on the anniversary of 9\/11. (Apparently they are also planning to burn the Talmud<\/a>, which was news to me<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 will they be protesting the end of Rosh ha-Shanah<\/a>?!). Stephen Prothero has called for moderate Christians to speak out on the issue of burning the Qur\u2019an<\/a>, and I agree that we should. <\/div>\nRev. Larry Reimer,\u00a0minister at the United Church of Gainesville, Florida,\u00a0recently proposed an alternative<\/a>: the best way to protest<\/a> what the Dove World Outreach Center in Gainesville, Florida is planning<\/a> is to read<\/em> the Qur\u2019an<\/strong><\/a>. This seems an appropriate way to not interfere with the free speech of others, and yet use our own freedom to express our dismay at those who use their freedom to express intolerance and to attempt to provoke others to violence and conflict.<\/p>\n Particularly if you\u2019ve only heard brief quotes from the Qur\u2019an which sound almost as horrific as the things you\u2019d read in Deuteronomy or Joshua in the Bible, then use this occasion to branch out a little and read something that gives a fuller sense of what is in the Qur\u2019an<\/a>.<\/p>\n When I first started teaching a course on world cultures that included a unit on the Islamic Middle East, we were advised to tell students to begin at the end. The suras in the Qur\u2019an seem to have been organized in size order, apart from the first one. And so the short, most manageable chapters are at the end. If you\u2019d like to join in this event, that\u2019s a good place to turn to start. And of course, if you don\u2019t have a print copy, there are many<\/a> English<\/a> versions<\/a> available<\/a> online<\/a>.<\/p>\n So please promote \u201cRead a Qur\u2019an Day<\/strong>\u201d as an alternative to \u201cBurn a Qur\u2019an Day.\u201d Why is this important?
