Here is an example of how they can be used for educational purposes.<\/p>\n<p>If you <a href=\"https:\/\/letmegooglethat.com\/?q=Mary+Magdalene&amp;l=1\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Google \u201cMary Magdalene\u201d<\/a> and click on the image tab, you will see a lot of art depicting the red haired penitent former prostitute. See my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/religionprof\/2023\/02\/chatgpt-on-mary-magdalene.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">earlier post<\/a> on the fact that this misrepresents Mary Magdalene, with the story of a student interacting with ChatGPT on the subject.<\/p>\n<p>If you browse what an AI image generator like NightCafe has under that label, you will find the range of pop culture stereotypes about her today, including some that are sexualized or place Jesus and Mary together in a romantic pose.<\/p>\n<p>Before I turn to the images that students prompted AI tools to generate, let me share this image that was provided to me by an AI image generator.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-98525\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/719\/2025\/02\/Mary-Magdalene-ChatGPT-2-12-2024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"868\" height=\"866\"><\/p>\n<p>As far as conventional images go, I like the fact that it does one of the things that I sought to do in my chapter on Mary Magdalene in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/44E3nmr\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>What Jesus Learned from Women<\/em><\/a>. It makes her more \u201cordinary\u201d and thus realistic than images that suggest a life of prostitution or that make her Jesus\u2019 love interest.<\/p>\n<p>The capacity for AI to generate photorealistic images is illustrated by three that one student shared. The similarity between them is striking, as are the differences.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-98522 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/719\/2025\/02\/Mary-Magdalene-2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"640\"><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-98726\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/719\/2025\/03\/6ed6b60c-9d4d-4c10-8162-bd412fa0f309.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"640\"><\/p>\n<p>This student\u2019s image is striking for the same reason.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/butler.instructure.com\/users\/67411\/files\/4415984\/preview?verifier=yLDjH8FnJSgGPFjWbSnC79XNgbmWYHeqPcWB1euz\" alt=\"DALL\u00b7E 2025-02-12 14.35.36 - A historically and ethnically accurate depiction of Mary Magdalene, a Jewish woman from first-century Galilee. She has olive to light brown skin, dark.webp\"><\/p>\n<p>Contrast the previous one with this one below generated by the same student, which reflects more traditional European artistic traditions, such as the red hair and the jar of perfume reflecting her identification with Mary of Bethany and\/or the \u201csinful woman\u201d from Luke\u2019s Gospel.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/butler.instructure.com\/users\/67411\/files\/4415954\/preview?verifier=p5QzW2aK2qCXthz6p8EtkwwwfyExW79lN981VdWH\" alt=\"DALL\u00b7E 2025-02-12 14.26.39 - A realistic painting of Mary Magdalene, depicted as a serene and contemplative woman with long, flowing auburn hair. She is wearing a deep red robe wi.webp\"><\/p>\n<p>Here are some others that students created.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/butler.instructure.com\/users\/75693\/files\/4415989\/preview?verifier=xoBRJAVLeP00MP4zJYM7hV9uPjBX9rgkZvk0P3Uh\" alt=\"image.png\"><\/p>\n<p>For this one, the student specified that she should look \u201ctroubled\u201d reflecting the tradition about her having been freed from seven demons.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/butler.instructure.com\/users\/44799\/files\/4415982\/preview?verifier=ZEz3fUCyJikytzNEn3Meaj1Uu7KXERFRI1kOERTg\" alt=\"image.png\"><\/p>\n<p>For this one, I really want to know what she is up to. Those don\u2019t look like Sabbath candles. Also, who\u2019s that in the background?!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/butler.instructure.com\/users\/66783\/files\/4415953\/preview?verifier=oaC3tA5JwEqTSY2C51mXH0aak8QCUYroOCZZr10J\" alt=\"Untitled design.png\"><\/p>\n<p>This one hints at something that was likely true about Mary Magdalene, given that she was a financial sponsor of the Jesus movement, namely her wealth.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/butler.instructure.com\/users\/66783\/files\/4415985\/preview?verifier=n8UMDoKluRRiztOGs8Rn72IsK0EA0OTVMFBbe1Js\" alt=\"Untitled design (2).png\"><\/p>\n<p>Here is another red-haired example.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/butler.instructure.com\/users\/75693\/files\/4415937\/preview?verifier=orySCLuFbHmKmSBe1vkRHt3kM79s4wW7qsMzGn7g\" alt=\"image.png\"><\/p>\n<p>This one also strikes me as more Irish than Middle Eastern.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/butler.instructure.com\/users\/67632\/files\/4415948\/preview?verifier=qGrtQddKl2JWIcEnxaQGgUWz5i3ngnxVB3tV6jsj\" alt=\"Screenshot 2025-02-12 142258.png\"><\/p>\n<p>One more pair from a student, before I tell you what I asked them about the assumptions at work in online art, which is likely to be reflected in AI-generated images.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/butler.instructure.com\/users\/44799\/files\/4415935\/preview?verifier=bOG5yOmInDTMhnlX0m48zmcb6gaiGUowakEpABy4\" alt=\"image.png\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-98723\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/719\/2025\/03\/Mary-AI.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"624\" height=\"624\"><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019ve read my book\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4gPxewh\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>What Jesus Learned from Women<\/em><\/a> you may be able to guess the bias that I pointed out in all of these. They all assume that Mary Magdalene was a young woman, younger than Jesus or at most around his age. The New Testament does not give that impression. Here is an AI-generated image depicting Mary Magdalene as an older woman. It may skew too far in the other direction. On the other hand, someone quite aged and respected would fit the prominence and influence she has among Jesus\u2019 disciples.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-98594\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/719\/2025\/02\/Mary-Magdalene-older.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"835\" height=\"833\"><\/p>\n<p>What do you think of this example of using AI image generators in an educational context?
