Here\u2019s how it begins:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The God of Christian theism is the Source of Reason. St. John calls the Second Person of the Trinity,\u00a0<em>the Logos<\/em>, a Greek term from which we get<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Relativism-Feet-Firmly-Planted-Mid-Air\/dp\/0801058066\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-868\" src=\"https:\/\/wp.patheos.com\/community\/sites\/50\/2011\/03\/9780801058066-198x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"198\" height=\"300\"><\/a> the word \u201clogic.\u201d Within the greatest commandment is the instruction to \u201clove the Lord your God with all your. . .<em>mind<\/em>\u201d (Matt 22:37-JB). St. Peter commands believers to \u201calways have your answer ready for people who ask you the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.catholic.org\/encyclopedia\/view.php?id=9875\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">reason<\/a> for the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.catholic.org\/encyclopedia\/view.php?id=5889\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">hope<\/a> that you have. But give it with courtesy and respect and with a clear conscience\u201d (I Peter 3:15-16). St. Paul commands the Church in I Thess. 5:21 \u201cto think before you do anything. . .\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When explaining the Christian faith on Mars Hill, St. Paul shows a better than average knowledge of his opponents\u2019 philosophies and beliefs. In his dispute with the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers, St. Paul quotes from the Greek poet Epimenides (Acts 17:28a) and from the\u00a0<em>Phainomena<\/em> of Aratus (Acts 17:28b), both of which are non-Christian sources. But this was the brilliance of Paul\u2019s apologetic. Taking the time to study and understand the philosophical systems of his intellectual adversaries, Paul sought a common ground with his non-Christian audience so that he could share the Christian story with them.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thecatholicthing.org\/columns\/2011\/come-let-us-reason.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Continue reading&gt;&gt;&gt;<\/a><\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>That is the title of my latest entry on The Catholic Thing.
