Here\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/homepage.mac.com\/francis.beckwith\/Logos.pdf\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">how it begins<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/wp.patheos.com\/community\/sites\/50\/2011\/04\/baylor.university.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-904\" src=\"https:\/\/wp.patheos.com\/community\/sites\/50\/2011\/04\/baylor.university.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"272\" height=\"204\"><\/a> (notes omitted):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Baylor University, the world\u2019s largest Baptist university, is a re<span style=\"font-size: 13.1944px\">markable place with many fine Christian men and women on its <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13.1944px\">faculty and in its student body. It boasts a rich tradition of academic <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13.1944px\">excellence, and it is a privilege for me to be able to make a con<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13.1944px\">tribution to that tradition, however modest my contribution may <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13.1944px\">be. However, soon after my arrival at Baylor in 2003 it came as a <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13.1944px\">surprise to me to learn that among the university\u2019s most respected <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13.1944px\">faculty, denominational leaders, and alumni are those who reject <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13.1944px\">creeds as normative for Christian belief. For example, one theo<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13.1944px\">logian of this stripe, James Dunn, enthusiastically asserted that the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13.1944px\">only creed his tradition accepts is \u201cAin\u2019t nobody but Jesus goin\u2019 to <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13.1944px\">tell me what to believe.\u201d Of course, there are many Baptists, in<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13.1944px\">cluding Baylor faculty, alumni, and regents, who disagree with the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13.1944px\">point of view held by Dunn and others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>As one would suspect, this anti-creedalism, as its advocates ar<span style=\"font-size: 13.1944px\">gue, has implications for the life of a Christian university. For they <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13.1944px\">maintain that an academic institution\u2019s embracing of a creed\u2014as a <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13.1944px\">standard of orthodoxy to assist the university in assessing the Chris<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13.1944px\">tian faith of prospective and current faculty members\u2014is a viola<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13.1944px\">tion of academic freedom as well as oppressive to the believer\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13.1944px\">liberty and spiritual integrity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I believe this view is mistaken, but not because its advocates do\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 13.1944px\">not mean well or that they are not committed to the truth of the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13.1944px\">Gospel or the primacy of the Christian message.
