{"id":4017,"date":"2018-10-22T14:27:22","date_gmt":"2018-10-22T18:27:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/revangelical\/?p=4017"},"modified":"2018-10-22T14:27:22","modified_gmt":"2018-10-22T18:27:22","slug":"following-jesus-into-the-political-realm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/revangelical\/2018\/10\/22\/following-jesus-into-the-political-realm.html","title":{"rendered":"Following Jesus Into the Political Realm"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><div id=\"contentsContainer\">\n<div id=\"contents\">\n<p id=\"E88\"><span id=\"E89\">Last week, we kicked off this series called \u201cPolarized\u201d with the understanding that Christianity is an inherently political faith- that the message and the example of Jesus, both in his day and in ours, had inherently political implications. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E91\"><span id=\"E92\">Politics, we learned, is literally defined as caring for the affairs of the city and the people in it, and religion, according to the Bible, is caring for \u201cwidows and orphans in their <\/span><span id=\"E93\">affiliations<\/span><span id=\"E94\">\u201d, in other words, caring for the people that are most <\/span><span id=\"E95\">vulnerable<\/span><span id=\"E96\"> in our communities, cities, and world. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E98\"><span id=\"E99\">As much as it makes so many of us uncomfortable, often for good reason, if we are going to be serious about following Jesus in our modern world, we must carefully look at Jesus and his teachings and ask how they should impact how we engage in our modern society at every level- from electing political leaders to engaging in individual acts of kindness in our day to day lives. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E101\"><span id=\"E102\">Today, I want to take us on a journey through Jesus\u2019 life to answer two primary questions:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li id=\"E103\" class=\"qowt-li-0_0 qowt-list qowt-stl-ListParagraph\"><span id=\"E104\">How did Jesus engage with political leaders and the political system around him?<\/span><\/li>\n<li id=\"E105\" class=\"qowt-li-0_0 qowt-list qowt-stl-ListParagraph\"><span id=\"E106\">What are the key values Jesus and his followers embraced? <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p id=\"E108\"><span id=\"E109\">From these two questions, it\u2019s my hope that we will be able to walk away with a better of understanding of how <\/span><span id=\"E110\">we <\/span><span id=\"E111\">should engage politically and ethically, not just in elections, but in our <\/span><span id=\"E112\">everyday<\/span><span id=\"E113\"> life. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"pageBorders\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"contentsContainer\">\n<div id=\"contents\">\n<p id=\"E115\"><span id=\"E116\">In Luke 20, we have a familiar scene. Jesus is walking about Jerusalem, the seat of both political and religious power in ancient Israel, teaching openly to the public about this idea he called \u201cthe Kingdom of God\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E119\"><span id=\"E120\">The Kingdom of God, according to Jesus, is the world as God intends it to be. It effects every level of existence, from how people act in their personal relations, to how the society is ordered politically. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E122\"><span id=\"E123\">This idea was considered highly dangerous by both the religious and political leaders in Jesus day- those who listened in heard him quite clearly declaring that God intended, through him, to overturn the unjust political system and social ordering, and create a new world order. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E125\"><span id=\"E126\">As Jesus gained more popularity and more disciples, the powers of his day began to get increasingly nervous- would he cause an uprising? Would he seek to overthrow the governor and the Sanhedrin?<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E128\"><span id=\"E129\">It is in the context of this tension that we find Jesus in our Scripture Passage this morning. This is what is written: <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E131\"><span id=\"E132\">\u201cSo [the chief priests]\u201d who are politically appointed by <\/span><span id=\"E133\">Caesars<\/span><span id=\"E134\"> governor, by the way, \u201cwatched him and sent spies to trap him by what he said, so as to hand him over to the jurisdiction and the authority of the governor.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E136\"><span id=\"E137\">Do you see what\u2019s happening here? <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E139\"><span id=\"E140\">In the ancient world, just as in our world, religious powers had mingled with political power, and the religious leaders had become tools of the State. In this particular arrangement, the Jewish leaders we free to practice their religion in Israel as they saw fit, as long as they continued to honor <\/span><span id=\"E141\">Caesar<\/span><span id=\"E142\"> through acts of <\/span><span id=\"E143\">exaltation<\/span><span id=\"E144\">, paying taxes, and submitting to his governors. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"pageBorders\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"contentsContainer\">\n<div id=\"contents\">\n<p id=\"E146\"><span id=\"E147\">This deal sounded good to the religious leaders- they were granted a level of political power over their people, and the governor treated them with wealth and status so long as they kept the peace through ensuring their people did what <\/span><span id=\"E148\">Caesar<\/span><span id=\"E149\"> desired. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E151\"><span id=\"E152\">But as is often the case, when greed and power is motivation, the deal that is cut is usually really good for those at the top, but pretty terrible for the people at the bottom. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E154\"><span id=\"E155\">The Jewish people worshipped only one God, and they believed that God was the King and Ruler over all. They were not to pledge their allegiance to anyone other than God, this was written into their commandments. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E157\"><span id=\"E158\">They were especially hesitant to obey and pledge allegiance to a ruler that was currently unjustly occupying their land, that had oppressed their people for centuries. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E160\"><span id=\"E161\">The people were distrustful of their religious leaders, and rightfully so. In the first century, uprisings were common. People were ready to rise up and topple the Roman Empires grip on their lives, their land, and their religion. Anytime a person rose up claiming they had a vision to overturn the empire and the anointing of God, folks would follow them. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E163\"><span id=\"E164\">After all, this is what God had promised them. A Messiah, who was a divinely appointed political leader who was to liberate the Jewish people and bring justice to the four corners of the earth. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E166\"><span id=\"E167\">People were desperate for a messiah to come and save them- and many did come, claiming this divine title, but were crushed time and time again by the Roman Empire. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"pageBorders\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"contentsContainer\">\n<div id=\"contents\">\n<p id=\"E169\"><span id=\"E170\">So,<\/span><span id=\"E171\"> when Jesus comes on the scene, the religious leaders are very aware of what he is trying to do. In their mind, he\u2019s just another one of the revolutionaries and would-be Messiahs who they simply need to wait for to cross a legal boundary- namely speak directly against <\/span><span id=\"E172\">Caesar<\/span><span id=\"E173\"> or declare an uprising- and they will deliver him over to be executed. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E175\"><span id=\"E176\">By the time our passage in Luke 20 happens, the religious leaders had a good reason to believe an uprising by Jesus was <\/span><span id=\"E177\">imminent<\/span><span id=\"E178\">. Just a few days earlier, one chapter previous, Jesus rode into the city on a donkey, with people waving palm branches and declaring him to <\/span><span id=\"E179\">be<\/span><span id=\"E180\"> a king. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E182\"><span id=\"E183\">This seems like a very clear action of someone who is about to try to overturn the government and set themselves up as the new ruler, does it not?<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E185\"><span id=\"E186\">So,<\/span><span id=\"E187\"> the religious leaders are watching Jesus closely. Our passage begins by telling us they sent spies to listen, to ask him hard questions, and to try to get him to announce his anti-imperial resistance so they could arrest him. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E189\"><span id=\"E190\">The passage continues:<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E192\"><span id=\"E193\">\u201c<\/span><span id=\"E194\">So,<\/span><span id=\"E195\"> they asked, \u201cTeacher, we know that you are right in what you say and teach, a<\/span><span id=\"E196\">nd you show deference to no one, but teach the way of God in accordance with truth. Is it lawful to pay taxes to the emporer or not?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E198\"><span id=\"E199\">These are sneaky suns-of-guns, <\/span><span id=\"E200\">aren\u2019t<\/span><span id=\"E201\"> they? <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E203\"><span id=\"E204\">It was the common Jewish teaching, as I\u2019ve already said, to only \u201cpay deference to God\u201d and not to any human being. This was seen as generally acceptable by the Roman Empire, as long as folks continued to \u201cpay deference\u201d literally, through taxes. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"pageBorders\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"contentsContainer\">\n<div id=\"contents\">\n<p id=\"E206\"><span id=\"E207\">When the spies ask Jesus this question, they are really hoping for him to say something like \u201c<\/span><span id=\"E208\">No- we shouldn\u2019t pay taxes to <\/span><span id=\"E209\">Caesar<\/span><span id=\"E210\">, for he is not the true King, I am.\u201d<\/span><span id=\"E211\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E213\"><span id=\"E214\">Those words would be a death sentence. They would be treason. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E216\"><span id=\"E217\">And for our purposes, I want to point out the question under the question here. <\/span><span id=\"E218\">What Jesus<\/span><span id=\"E219\"> is being asked is \u201c<\/span><span id=\"E220\">Should his followers participate and respect government<\/span><span id=\"E221\">?\u201d- even governments that may not reflect their values. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E223\"><span id=\"E224\">With that lens, let\u2019s hear Jesus\u2019 response. The text continues:<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E226\"><span id=\"E227\">\u201cBut Jesus perceived their craftiness and said them: \u201cShow me a denarius (which is a typical Roman Coin). Whose head and title does it bear?\u201d They said, \u201cThe <\/span><span id=\"E228\">emperor\u2019s<\/span><span id=\"E229\">.\u201d He said to them, \u201cThen give to the <\/span><span id=\"E230\">emperor<\/span><span id=\"E231\"> the things that are the <\/span><span id=\"E232\">emperors<\/span><span id=\"E233\">, and give to God the things that are God\u2019s.\u201d And they were not able in the presence of the people to trap him by what he said; and being amazed by his answer, they became silent.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E235\"><span id=\"E236\">The way Jesus answers here <\/span><span id=\"E237\">are<\/span><span id=\"E238\"> simply brilliant, and outlines a general principle for how Jesus\u2019 followers should engage the political system.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E240\"><span id=\"E241\">Remember, Jesus was perceived to be a Messianic figure by many of his followers- they expected him to come and topple the empire and establish a new one. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E243\"><span id=\"E244\">Indeed, Jesus <\/span><span id=\"E245\">was <\/span><span id=\"E246\">a Messianic figure, but the way he desired to establish a new empire was entirely different from what his people wanted and expected. The Kingdom that Jesus proclaimed didn\u2019t come from the top down- it wasn\u2019t about making Jesus the new <\/span><span id=\"E247\">emperor<\/span><span id=\"E248\"> in\u00a0<\/span>literal, immediate sense- but it began first within individuals, then moved towards communities, then to society, and eventually to the whole world.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"contentsContainer\">\n<div id=\"contents\">\n<p id=\"E250\"><span id=\"E251\">The way Jesus sought to transform the world was through transforming individual lives and empowering those lives to go and restructure their communities, and then those communities could restructure cities, and cities could restructure nations, and nations could restructure the world in alignment with the vision of the Kingdom of God. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E253\"><span id=\"E254\">In this passage, Jesus brilliantly shows how his vision of societal transformation is both more powerful than political leaders could ever understand, but also worked well within political systems: <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E256\"><span id=\"E257\">The question is whether they should pay taxes to <\/span><span id=\"E258\">Caesar<\/span><span id=\"E259\">. These are likely Jewish people asking a Jewish Rabbi who <\/span><span id=\"E260\">knows <\/span><span id=\"E261\">that the only honor and worship belongs to God, whether they should keep paying taxes to a political leader who sees himself as a god. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E263\"><span id=\"E264\">Jesus has them take out a coin, and he asks whose head and whose name is on it. On every piece of currency, <\/span><span id=\"E265\">Caesars<\/span><span id=\"E266\"> face was affixed with the phrase \u201c<\/span><span id=\"E267\">Caesar<\/span><span id=\"E268\"> is Lord\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E270\"><span id=\"E271\">Everyone knew this. It was an effective piece of political propaganda- everyone used these coins every day to buy and sell and live a normal life in the city. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E273\"><span id=\"E274\">The spies answer that it is <\/span><span id=\"E275\">Caesars<\/span><span id=\"E276\"> name and <\/span><span id=\"E277\">Caesars<\/span><span id=\"E278\"> face on the coin- of course. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E280\"><span id=\"E281\">And Jesus responds: \u201cThe give to <\/span><span id=\"E282\">Caesar<\/span><span id=\"E283\"> the things that belong to him. But also give to God that which belongs to him.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"pageBorders\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"contentsContainer\">\n<div id=\"contents\">\n<p id=\"E285\"><span id=\"E286\">This is a trick statement. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E288\"><span id=\"E289\">Jesus says, these mere coins, even as important as they may be in their society, are things made by the empire. They are temporary, just like the empire is. So, as long as the empire stands, in order to live a normal life, give to the empire the things that belong to it. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E291\"><span id=\"E292\">Play the game. Mere coins don\u2019t offend God. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E294\"><span id=\"E295\">But as you play the game of live under the empire, remember also to give to God what is due to God. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E297\"><span id=\"E298\">And what is due to God? <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E300\"><span id=\"E301\">Everything. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E303\"><span id=\"E304\">Do you see what he did there? He said- \u201cSure, give the coins that <\/span><span id=\"E305\">Caesar<\/span><span id=\"E306\"> made back to <\/span><span id=\"E307\">Caesar<\/span><span id=\"E308\">. Respect the rules and the system that we live in. But then live your life with your deepest allegiance and affections postured towards God. Give your deepest honor to God alone. Live your life according to God\u2019s laws and God\u2019s principles.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E310\"><span id=\"E311\">Jesus says this because he knows two things: The empire could never stop individuals and communities giving their lives in worship to God, for there was no way for them to see the posture of the heart of the people who live in reverence to God. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E313\"><span id=\"E314\">The second thing is that Jesus knew when people engaged in the seemingly harmless acts of justice, mercy, and charity that God calls them to, the society will necessarily be transformed. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E316\"><span id=\"E317\">Time and time again Jesus teaches, along with all of the Prophets of the Hebrew Bible, that acts of justice and charity are meant to be done\u00a0<\/span><em><span id=\"E318\">regularly <\/span><span id=\"E319\">and <\/span><\/em><span id=\"E320\"><em>quietly<\/em>. <\/span><span id=\"E321\">They are meant to be done <\/span><span id=\"E322\">humbly. <\/span><span id=\"E323\">Not so others can see and give you praise for these actions. But so that God alone can see and extend the reach of God\u2019s Kingdom through you.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"contentsContainer\">\n<div id=\"contents\">\n<p id=\"E325\"><span id=\"E326\">To translate this into principles in our own day- Jesus says to <\/span><span id=\"E327\">participate and respect <\/span><span id=\"E328\">the political system- and I think we can also say that if the world Jesus was living in was democratic, he\u2019d so \u201cvote for the candidates that best reflect <\/span><span id=\"E329\">not your own <\/span><span id=\"E330\">self-interest<\/span><span id=\"E331\">, but the principles and values of God.<\/span><span id=\"E332\">\u201d Engage in the human systems of governance, as imperfect as they are. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E334\"><span id=\"E335\">Jesus wanted his disciples to be a part of society. In the world, not of the world, as John later writes. We\u2019re not called to silo ourselves in little <\/span><span id=\"E336\">boroughs<\/span><span id=\"E337\"> where we try to live an alternative existence- no, we\u2019re called to live the values of the Kingdom in the midst of governments and societies that fall woefully short of God\u2019s heart. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E339\"><span id=\"E340\">This is literally what it means to be \u201csalt and light\u201d- how can we share the light of God\u2019s <\/span><span id=\"E341\">love;<\/span><span id=\"E342\"> how can we flavor and preserve our society if we\u2019re not engaged in it?<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E344\"><span id=\"E345\">To be effective disciples of Jesus, we\u2019re called to engage in our society and in culture. This also means, clearly from <\/span><span id=\"E346\">today\u2019s<\/span><span id=\"E347\"> text, engaging in the political systems and structures.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E349\"><span id=\"E350\">One other caveat on this point- this <\/span><span id=\"E351\">doesn\u2019t <\/span><span id=\"E352\">mean that we blindly e<\/span><span id=\"E353\">ngage with things the government<\/span><span id=\"E354\"> does that is unjust or against the values of the Kingdom of God. Part of the reason that Jesus is on the radar of the religious and political leaders of his day is precisely because he speaks clearly and boldly, calling out injustice and lies. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E355\"><span id=\"E356\">The Jewish tradition is chock full of prophets who literally stand up and speak powerfully against politicians <\/span><span id=\"E357\">by name <\/span><span id=\"E358\">as an act of God. They literally name political leaders, name their sin, and call them to\u00a0<\/span>repentance or else face \u201cGod\u2019s judgement\u201d which literally means the consequences of their actions.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"contentsContainer\">\n<div id=\"contents\">\n<p id=\"E360\"><span id=\"E361\">Jesus is a faithful teacher in this tradition. When <\/span><span id=\"E362\">Caesar<\/span><span id=\"E363\"> or the Governor or Religious Leaders do something wrong, he is not afraid to name them and call them to account. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E365\"><span id=\"E366\">This, then, is also our responsibility as Christians. If we are to be prophetic agents of transformation in our world today, we must be willing to speak against leaders who act unjustly as an act of faith. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E368\"><span id=\"E369\">As another side note here, I want to have a quick frank discussion. Sometimes, from this pulpit, I and others have named particularly our current President and called out blatant sins he has committed. In our hyper polarized culture, <\/span><span id=\"E370\">it\u2019s<\/span><span id=\"E371\"> easy to see this action as a partisan or divisive. It\u2019s easy to feel uncomfortable, especially for those in our midst who may align politically with the President. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E373\"><span id=\"E374\">I want you to hear me clearly: <\/span><span id=\"E375\">This has nothing to do with Democrat or Republican. You can be a Republican and still clearly stand against immorality by the President, and in fact, most Republicans in our nation do. You can also be a Democrat who condemns immorality by the President and still respect Republicans political positions as valid in our country. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E377\"><span id=\"E378\">But the tradition that the Christian faith comes from is a prophetic tradition \u2013 it\u2019s one that <\/span><span id=\"E379\">at its very core <\/span><span id=\"E380\">is about those committed to following the values of God speaking those values boldly in the public square because they realize that those values are for the benefit of <\/span><span id=\"E381\">everyone<\/span><span id=\"E382\">, not just themselves. It\u2019s also a tradition that demands that all of us use our voices to speak truth to power- especially in the religious context.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"pageBorders\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"contentsContainer\">\n<div id=\"contents\">\n<p id=\"E384\"><span id=\"E385\">Have you heard of the story in the Hebrew Bible of Radshack, Meeshack, and Abednigo? They confronted the King in the name of God and were thrown into a furnace? Have you heard of heard of how the early Apostles were all rounded up and publicly executed for speaking directly against the empire? <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E387\"><span id=\"E388\">This is our tradition. To speak truth to power, to work for a just and equal world especially for the oppressed and marginalized, no matter what the cost is to us. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E390\"><span id=\"E391\">So,<\/span><span id=\"E392\"> when any leader, regardless of their party or beliefs, acts in a way that represents our country as immoral, it is the job of all faithful followers of Christ to speak up with our voices, with our feet, and yes, even with our votes. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E394\"><span id=\"E395\">This may make some of us uncomfortable- but I cannot see any way to be a faithful follower of Jesus that does not entail acts of resistance and truth-telling. They are inextricably linked. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E397\"><span id=\"E398\">So,<\/span><span id=\"E399\"> the first thing Jesus teaches us is to engage in the political system- both <\/span><span id=\"E400\">adhering<\/span><span id=\"E401\"> and respecting it, and also speaking truth and demanding change when injustice is <\/span><span id=\"E402\">enshrined<\/span><span id=\"E403\"> in power or law. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E405\"><span id=\"E406\">The second point, Jesus makes is for us to remember that true transformation of the world <\/span><span id=\"E407\">really does begin with us as individuals. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E409\"><span id=\"E410\">As cheesy as that may sound, it is not just a clich\u00e9. When we render ourselves to God, when we work to allow the Kingdom of God to begin in our own hearts and lives <\/span><span id=\"E411\">first <\/span><span id=\"E412\">before we demand that it manifests in others, we become more effective channels of transformation. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E414\"><span id=\"E415\">Canadian <\/span><span id=\"E416\">Psychotherapist<\/span><span id=\"E417\"> and Philosopher Jordan Peterson says this so succinctly<\/span><span id=\"E418\">. He says<\/span><span id=\"E419\">: <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"pageBorders\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"contentsContainer\">\n<div id=\"contents\">\n<p id=\"E421\"><span id=\"E422\">\u201cIn the play, \u201cThe Cocktail Party\u201d by T.S. Elliot, one of the characters is having a very hard time. She speaks of her profound unhappiness to her psychiatrist. She tells him that she hopes her profound suffering is all her own fault. Taken aback, the psychiatrist asks \u201cWhy?\u201d. She responds by saying, \u201cIf it\u2019s my fault, I can do something about it.\u201d If it\u2019s in the nature of the world, however, <\/span><span id=\"E423\">she\u2019s<\/span><span id=\"E424\"> doomed. She <\/span><span id=\"E425\">can\u2019t<\/span><span id=\"E426\"> change anything else. But she can change herself\u2026 Most of us have a chance to make our lives better by starting small. Asking if we have set our lives in order. If the answer is \u201cNo\u201d, simply stop doing what we know is wrong. What are you doing that\u2019s wrong from your own perspective, and what can you do that\u2019s right, right now? If you do this, your life will improve. After months of efforts, your mind will clear and <\/span><span id=\"E427\">you\u2019ll<\/span><span id=\"E428\"> begin to see right and wrong more clearly. You will still suffer, that\u2019s the price of being alive, but <\/span><span id=\"E429\">you\u2019ll<\/span><span id=\"E430\"> be able to overcome that suffering with nobility. For the proper way to fix the world isn\u2019t to fix the world, but to fix yourself. <\/span><span id=\"E431\">You\u2019ll<\/span><span id=\"E432\"> do no one any harm by doing so, and in that manner, at least, <\/span><span id=\"E433\">you\u2019ll<\/span><span id=\"E434\"> make the world a better place.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E436\"><span id=\"E437\">If we begin by reigning in our own desires, cutting out sin and excess in our own lives, we become more whole, <\/span><span id=\"E438\">healthier<\/span><span id=\"E439\">, and more able to do bigger acts of transformative justice in the world around us. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E441\"><span id=\"E442\">When we take time to look at the log in our own eye, as Jesus says, then we\u2019re better able to later help our neighbor remove the speck in their eye once we can see clearly ourselves. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E444\"><span id=\"E445\">If we\u2019re going to be effective agents of change in our society, we must first begin by submitting our own hearts and our own minds to God- to becoming the healthy and whole people that God desires us to be. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E447\"><span id=\"E448\">Now, this isn\u2019t a neat process- one must sequentially come before the other- but rather, as you\u2019re working to conform your inner life to Christ, <\/span>you will naturally also be propelled to do justice and seek healing in the world around you. These things happen simultaneously.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"contentsContainer\">\n<div id=\"contents\">\n<p id=\"E450\"><span id=\"E451\">But so often, especially in this day, we jump right into the fray of activism and justice without first dealing with our own baggage, pain, and hurt. Without first making sure we are healthy and taken care of.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E453\"><span id=\"E454\">This results in us hurting other people needlessly and being hurt by others. It results in more polarization, because were not showing up as our healthiest, best selves, but with all of our sharp and jagged edges hanging out everywhere. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E456\"><span id=\"E457\">For Christians, it means we act impulsively, not considering if our actions are in alignment with Christ and his path, which hurts our witness for the Gospel and ultimately does more harm than it does good. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E459\"><span id=\"E460\">In our passage today, Jesus tells us to participate in the political and social systems of our imperfect world, while continuing to render to God what belongs to God- our hearts and lives and world. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E462\"><span id=\"E463\">What this means is that it is both possible and necessary to engage in the <\/span><span id=\"E464\">political<\/span><span id=\"E465\"> and social sphere <\/span><span id=\"E466\">as those who have deep relationships with God and are <\/span><span id=\"E467\">committed<\/span><span id=\"E468\"> to God\u2019s vision of how the world should be. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E470\"><span id=\"E471\">So,<\/span><span id=\"E472\"> as we look at our world today, the question we must ask is: How can I engage in the system that is both faithful to the system and also works to bring about the values of the Kingdom? <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E474\"><span id=\"E475\">How can I embody Jesus and his inclusive gospel to society? <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E477\"><span id=\"E478\">And most importantly, what areas of my own life do I need to take time to work on to bring in alignment with Christ and his values? <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"pageBorders\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"contentsContainer\">\n<div id=\"contents\">\n<p id=\"E480\"><span id=\"E481\">If we continually ask ourselves these questions, I believe we will be led in a path that <\/span><span id=\"E482\">powerfully reflects<\/span><span id=\"E483\"> Christ to our society and brings about lasting transformation of our lives and our world. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E485\"><span id=\"E486\">Faithful citizens. And faithful followers of Jesus. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E488\"><span id=\"E489\">For this is our call as disciples of Christ. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E491\"><span id=\"E492\">I want to end today by praying the words of a famous prayer that brings together both of these calls- towards self-improvement and social action- written by one of my favorite and most <\/span><span id=\"E493\">influential<\/span><span id=\"E494\"> pastors in American history, Rev. Reinhold <\/span><span id=\"E495\">Niebuhr<\/span><span id=\"E496\">. It\u2019s called, \u201cThe Serenity Prayer\u201d- may these words wash over you: <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E498\"><span id=\"E499\">\u201cGod, give us grace to except with serenity <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E500\"><span id=\"E501\">things that cannot be change, <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E502\"><span id=\"E503\">courage to change the things <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E504\"><span id=\"E505\">which should be changed, <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E506\"><span id=\"E507\">and the wisdom to distinguish <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E508\"><span id=\"E509\">one from the other. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E511\"><span id=\"E512\">Living one day at a time, <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E513\"><span id=\"E514\">Enjoying one moment at a time,<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E515\"><span id=\"E516\">Accepting hardship as the pathway to peace, <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E517\"><span id=\"E518\">Taking, as Jesus did, <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E519\"><span id=\"E520\">This sinful world as it is, <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E521\"><span id=\"E522\">Not as I would have it, <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E523\"><span id=\"E524\">Trusting that you will make all things right, <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E525\"><span id=\"E526\">If I surrender to your will, <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E527\"><span id=\"E528\">So that I may be reasonably happy in this life, <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E529\"><span id=\"E530\">And supremely happy with you forever in the next. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E531\"><span id=\"E532\">Amen. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last week, we kicked off this series called \u201cPolarized\u201d with the understanding that Christianity is an inherently political faith- that the message and the example of Jesus, both in his day and in ours, had inherently political implications.
