The immediate and constant feedback I\u2019ve been receiving, known as pain, has brought forward several insights related to how I view and interpret pain. My insights and train of thought below apply specifically to localized pain that can be treated, whether referring to physical, emotional or spiritual pain.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_219\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-219\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/342\/2013\/06\/Chartres-crypt-entrance-7jun13.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-219\" title=\"Chartres crypt entrance 7jun13\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/342\/2013\/06\/Chartres-crypt-entrance-7jun13-300x213.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"213\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-219\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(c) Carl Studna<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The act of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.saybrook.edu\/newexistentialists\/posts\/10-12-12\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\">healing is expansive, whereas fear is constrictive.<\/a> When muscles and areas of the body contract or receive injury, pain is felt or created. How do we respond to pain; as a wake-up call to expand, or with fearful thoughts that cause greater contraction?\u00a0\u00a0 Healing is an act of revealing the truth, and the truth always sets us free. Pain is either our ally, telling us where we need to expand and bring in the light of truth, or we view it as our fearful enemy, here to bring us down.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>How we respond and listen to pain determines whether we expand or contract.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>We interpret pain in one of two ways:<br>\nPain = Expansion via insights that lead to breakthroughs.<br>\nPain = Contraction through shutting down our body or mind.<\/p>\n<p>If thoughts (being energy) create things, or determine the physical matter around us, are our thoughts expansive or constrictive? Constrictive thoughts produce fearful emotions that can tighten the body and block our flow of expansive energy. When our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chopra.com\/community\/online-library\/terms\/chakras\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">energy is blocked,<\/a> our freedom is hindered and we experience pain. The greater that we\u2019re able to \u201clet go\u201d into the pain, the clearer it will teach us and guide us into greater wisdom and insight.<\/p>\n<p>This isn\u2019t necessarily an easy thing to do given that Western culture generally sees pain as something to avoid at all costs! We must learn to practice the art of observing our pain in order to not get sucked into the conditioned emotional response of feeling victimized by it. Rather than asking, \u201cWhy is this happening to me?\u201d a more beneficial question would be, \u201cWhat insights can I gain that will give me greater wisdom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>When we learn from our pain, it will often lessen or subside.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Imagine if our bodies were always in a state of numbness and we couldn\u2019t feel any sensations, whatsoever. No pain, no pleasure, nothing! We would have no <a href=\"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/\/Hindu\/Hear-Inner-Guidance-Sally-Kempton-05-09-2012.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\">guidance<\/a> to serve as our compass for making beneficial choices, not to mention that life would be extremely boring! We\u2019re here to learn from our pain and honor its wisdom as it teaches us how to live wiser and more compassionate lives.
