That\u00a0Time<\/em>\u00a0named Pope Francis \u201cPerson of the Year\u201d was not a surprise. But for\u00a0The Advocate<\/em>to follow suit<\/a>\u00a0is a big bag of\u00a0whut?<\/em>\u00a0for this liberal Catholic. Perhaps the venerable LGBT magazine thought this would be an appropriate birthday present for the pontiff, but the gift, as well as the thought behind it, is misplaced.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
In case the editors of\u00a0The Advocate<\/em>\u00a0did not notice, the Pope\u2019s statement flying back from Brazil for World Youth Day was not a change in Catholic teaching, but in\u00a0tone<\/em>.<\/span><\/div>\n
The Pope\u2019s \u201cIf someone is gay and seeks the Lord with good will, who am I to judge\u201d is not an\u00a0encyclical<\/em>, but a\u00a0statement. Granted, it was a statement that shocked the world with its compassion, but the follow-up proved that it was not a change in church teaching.<\/span><\/div>\n
In September of 2013, in an\u00a0interview<\/a>\u00a0with Rev. Anthony Spadaro, Pope Francis made clear that he is a \u201cSon of the Church\u201d on matters regarding the Church\u2019s catechism on homosexuality, abortion and contraception\u2014but that\u00a0\u201cthe dogmatic and moral teachings of the church are not all equivalent. The church\u2019s pastoral ministry cannot be obsessed with the transmission of a disjointed multitude of doctrines to be imposed insistently.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
