In the past, the LDS Church<\/a> has said history isn\u2019t clear on why blacks were banned from its all-male priesthood for more than a century.\u00a0<\/span>Now it is.\u00a0<\/span>The reason, according to a newly released explanation from the Utah-based Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints<\/a>, is rooted in racism rather than revelation.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u201cRace and the Priesthood,\u201d posted Friday on the church\u2019s website, lds.org, also jettisons any beliefs developed through the years to defend the prohibition. And those findings are drawing praise from black Mormons<\/a> and historians.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u201cHallelujah,\u201d said Catherine Stokes, a black Mormon who joined the LDS Church in Chicago and now lives in Utah. \u201cI view this as a Christmas gift to each and every member of the church \u2014 black, white or whatever ethnicity.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
