{"id":1026,"date":"2013-12-08T18:56:00","date_gmt":"2013-12-08T18:56:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/rhetoricraceandreligion\/2013\/12\/my-experience-of-community.html"},"modified":"2013-12-08T18:56:00","modified_gmt":"2013-12-08T18:56:00","slug":"my-experience-of-community","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/rhetoricraceandreligion\/2013\/12\/my-experience-of-community.html","title":{"rendered":"My Experience of Community"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><div style=\"background-color: white;line-height: 22px;margin-bottom: 10px;padding: 0px\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif\">For many feminists, experience is crucial.\u00a0 Experience has long been associated with feminist epistemological theories which suggest that reflection on and analysis of one\u2019s experiences offer crucial insight into society.\u00a0 In the history of the women\u2019s movement, this insight and analysis has many times translated into direct action to change the way our society functions.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color: white;line-height: 22px;margin-bottom: 10px;padding: 0px\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif\">Experience too has been problematized by various postmodern and postcolonial feminist theorists.\u00a0 They rightly point to the situated-ness of all experiences along class, race, gender, ethnic, religious and other lines.\u00a0 (For more on these ideas, one could read\u00a0<i style=\"font-weight: bold;text-decoration: none\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Postcolonialism-Feminism-Religious-Discourse-Pui-Lan\/dp\/0415928885\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1386109337&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=postcolonialism+feminism+and+religious+discourse\" style=\"font-weight: bold;text-decoration: none\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Postcolonialism, Feminism &amp; Religious Discourse<\/a>\u00a0<\/i>edited by Laura E. Donaldson and Kwok Pui-lan.)\u00a0 The context of each and every experience is different.\u00a0 It would be unwise therefore to assume that experiences produce adequate knowledge about societies and how they function.\u00a0 For example, the experience of white middle-class British women living in India during the British occupation is very different from her indigenous contemporary and completely different from lower caste men and women of the same time period.\u00a0 It is important to remember here that patriarchal privilege rears its head and favors some people\u2019s experiences over others, often codifying an experience as \u201cthe experience.\u201d\u00a0 When we talk about experience then we should acknowledge that there is no such thing as a generic experience. \u00a0In fact, some post-modernist feminist thinkers think that situated-ness can color experience so much that our experiences may not even be reliable descriptions of the way society functions.<span id=\"more-12423\"><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color: white;line-height: 22px;margin-bottom: 10px;padding: 0px\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif\">Nevertheless, I still find experiences important because I understand them to be our primary mode of embodiment.\u00a0 For many feminists, including myself, there is no thinking without physicality and, for me, experiences are what bring the mind and body together.\u00a0 \u00a0Yet, they do more than this.\u00a0 Experience functions in three ways.\u00a0 First, as embodied creatures, humans experience the world.\u00a0 Second, as social creatures, humans use their experiences to understand the world (i.e. what they are experiencing). \u00a0Finally, coming around full circle, humans, as embodied, social creatures, use their understanding of experiences to create different, and, more importantly, better experiences of the world around them.\u00a0 \u00a0Here are where ideas like justice and equality enter into the picture.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color: white;line-height: 22px;margin-bottom: 10px;padding: 0px\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif\">Read the rest <a href=\"http:\/\/feminismandreligion.com\/2013\/12\/08\/my-experience-of-community-by-ivy-helman\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">here<\/a><\/span><\/div>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For many feminists, experience is crucial.\u00a0 Experience has long been associated with feminist epistemological theories which suggest that reflection on and analysis of one\u2019s experiences offer crucial insight into society.\u00a0 In the history of the women\u2019s movement, this insight and analysis has many times translated into direct action to change the way our society functions.
