No, our eyes did not deceive us on last night\u2019s episode of\u00a0<\/span>Scandal<\/em>.\u00a0 Daddy Grant did exactly what we thought he did \u2013 he raped Mellie!\u00a0 My emotions ranged from being shocked to being disgusted to being distraught to being angry.\u00a0 All of that!\u00a0 Some of us thought she should have fought harder and scratched his eyes out.\u00a0 Perhaps others thought that Mellie shouldn\u2019t have been sitting so close to a drunken, old man\u2026but for heaven\u2019s sake \u2013 he\u2019s her father-in-law.\u00a0 And, yeah folks, that\u2019s called \u201cvictim blaming,\u201d which is part of the acceptance in a\u00a0<\/span>rape culture<\/strong>, defined as:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

a concept that links rape and sexual violence to the culture of a society, and in which prevalent attitudes and practices normalize, excuse, tolerate, and even condone rape.\u00a0 Examples of behaviors commonly associated with rape culture include victim blaming, sexual objectifications, and trivializing rape.\u00a0Rape culture has been used to model behavior within social groups, including prison systems\u00a0and conflict areas where war rape is used as psychological warfare. Entire countries have also been alleged to be rape cultures.<\/em><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

That scene surprised all of us.\u00a0 We didn\u2019t see it coming\u2026at all!\u00a0 I can\u2019t lie \u2013 I cursed during and after that scene because I was appalled. It was heartbreaking.\u00a0 I can only imagine how this rape scene was a reminder to some victims about the pain, shame, embarrassment, and helplessness of rape.\u00a0 Rape is rape is rape.\u00a0 It can\u2019t be packaged up\u00a0<\/span>pretty<\/em>\u00a0because it is absolutely\u00a0<\/span>ugly<\/strong><\/em>.<\/span><\/span>
