After all, what good are rights if you\u2019re injured or dead?<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color: white;border: 0px;line-height: 24px;padding: 0px 0px 1em;vertical-align: baseline\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif\">In the days after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, many policymakers used this forced choice to argue for new surveillance laws such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aclu.org\/reform-patriot-act\" style=\"border: 0px;font-style: inherit;font-variant: inherit;line-height: inherit;margin: 0px;padding: 0px;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">the Patriot Act<\/a>. The law gave the government sweeping new powers to spy on Americans by wiretapping, seizing financial records, tracking Internet activity, and more; but these measures, we were told, were a necessary trade-off for security.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color: white;border: 0px;line-height: 24px;padding: 0px 0px 1em;vertical-align: baseline\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif\">The FBI also paid informants to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thenation.com\/article\/168380\/deploying-informants-fbi-stings-muslims\" style=\"border: 0px;font-style: inherit;font-variant: inherit;line-height: inherit;margin: 0px;padding: 0px;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">infiltrate mosques<\/a>\u00a0and set up sting operations that were supposed to catch terrorists in our midst. Yes, the informants were sometimes the ones to suggest violent jihad in conversations with mosque goers. \u00a0In one case, members of a California mosque were so alarmed that they reported an informant to the FBI. But we were told that the \u201cwar on terror\u201d demanded aggressive tactics.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color: white;border: 0px;line-height: 24px;padding: 0px 0px 1em;vertical-align: baseline\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/bruceschneier\/2012\/05\/09\/the-trouble-with-airport-profiling\/\" style=\"border: 0px;font-style: inherit;font-variant: inherit;line-height: inherit;margin: 0px;padding: 0px;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Racial and religious profiling, particularly at airports<\/a>, followed a similar pattern. Folks who looked \u201cMuslim\u201d\u2014whatever that means\u2014were more likely be to stopped, questioned, and detained based on nothing more than their name, clothing, or skin color.
