Unless you have had your head buried in the sand for the past decade or so, if you are involved in the academic study of \u2018religion\u2019 you will have come across the field of \u2018Material Religion\u2019. People have\u00a0<\/span>written books about it<\/a>. Others founded a\u00a0<\/span>journal\u00a0<\/a>to study it.\u00a0<\/span>Edited volumes\u00a0<\/a>contain near innumerable chapters on it.\u00a0<\/span>Leading international Religious Studies podcasts\u00a0<\/a>have focused on it. And the BSA Sociology of Religion Study Group made it the focus of their\u00a0<\/span>annual conference at Durham University<\/a>, UK, in April of this year.<\/span><\/span>

<\/span><\/span>However, what exactly does Material Religion bring to Religious Studies? Is it a potentially revolutionary phenomenon, or merely a passing fad? How might one apply the theoretical perspectives and methodologies developed in this growing field to some of the defining debates of our subject area? To discuss these issues, and reflect on the conference in general, RSP hosts David Robertson and Christopher Cotter were joined by George Ioannides, Rachel Hanneman and Dr David Wilson (and some local regulars in the background) in the\u00a0<\/span>Swan and Three Cygnets<\/em>\u00a0pub in Durham, immediately after the conference finished.
