It\u2019s so much less ominously secular than calling them \u201cNones.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color: white;color: #333333;line-height: 24.96875px;margin-bottom: 10px\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif\">That\u2019s hardly an isolated example of sociological religion-coddling, according to my colleague Barry Kosmin (director of Trinity\u2019s Institute for the Study of Secularism in Society and Culture) and Ryan Cragun of the University of Tampa.\u00a0In the latest issue of\u00a0<em>Free Inquiry\u00a0<\/em>(journal of the Council for Secular Humanism),\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.secularhumanism.org\/index.php?section=fi&amp;page=cragun_kosmin_33_4\" style=\"color: #bd2403;text-decoration: none\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">they charge<\/a>\u00a0that there\u2019s a persistent pro-religious bias on the part of religion surveyors.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color: white;color: #333333;line-height: 24.96875px;margin-bottom: 10px\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif\">Such as Gallup, which\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wingia.com\/web\/files\/news\/14\/file\/14.pdf\" style=\"color: #bd2403;text-decoration: none\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">recently asked<\/a>\u00a0people around the world,\u00a0\u201cIrrespective of whether you attend a place of worship or not, would you say you are a religious person, not a religious person, or a convinced atheist?\u201d (If \u201cconvinced atheist,\u201d why not \u201cconvinced believer\u201d?)<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color: white;color: #333333;line-height: 24.96875px;margin-bottom: 10px\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif\">Or Canadian sociologist Reginald Bibby, who now asks his increasingly irreligious compatriots, \u201cWould you be receptive to greater religious involvement if you found religion to be worthwhile?\u201d Duh.<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"line-height: 24.96875px\">Read the rest <a href=\"http:\/\/marksilk.religionnews.com\/2013\/06\/19\/when-push-polling-comes-to-religion\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">here<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Faithful readers of this blog know that I have a bugaboo about survey research that calls people who say they have no religion \u201cunaffiliated\u201d \u2014 as if they were just waiting to be signed up.
