His number of recorded \u201ckills\u201d made him the most lethal sniper in US military history. Upon returning home, his memoir\u00a0<\/span><em><a class=\"InternalLink decorated-link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/American-Sniper-Autobiography-Military-History\/dp\/0062082353\" style=\"color: #fb9d04;font-weight: bold;text-decoration: none\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">American Sniper<\/a>\u00a0<\/em><span lang=\"EN-CA\">would go on to sell more than a million copies and become a\u00a0<em>New York Times<\/em>\u00a0bestseller. Kyle\u2019s popularity was enough that acclaimed director Steven Spielberg is\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"InternalLink decorated-link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/entertainment\/tv-movies\/steven-spielberg-direct-american-sniper-chris-kyle-article-1.1334021\" style=\"color: #fb9d04;font-weight: bold;text-decoration: none\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">producing a movie<\/a><span lang=\"EN-CA\">\u00a0based on his life.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color: white;line-height: 21px\"><em><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif\"><br><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color: white;line-height: 21px\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif\"><em><span lang=\"EN-CA\">American Sniper<\/span><\/em><span lang=\"EN-CA\">\u00a0begins with a scene describing Kyle killing an Iraqi woman whom he believed was about to attack US forces with a grenade \u2013 a woman he never knew but whom he described as having a \u201ctwisted soul\u201d and who would be only the first of hundreds of Iraqis whom Kyle would go on to kill during his time in the country. In addition to his military prowess, Kyle was famously dismissive of criticisms of his actions as a Navy SEAL and was remarkably self-assured about the morality of his deeds:<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div align=\"center\" style=\"background-color: white;line-height: 21px;margin-left: 30px\"><em><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\">\u201c<\/span><span lang=\"EN-CA\">People ask me all the time, \u2018How many people have you killed?\u2019\u2026 The number is not important to me. I only wish I had killed more. Not for bragging rights, but because I believe the world is a better place without savages out there taking American lives.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color: white;line-height: 21px;margin-left: 30px;text-align: left\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif\"><br><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color: white;line-height: 21px;margin-left: 30px;text-align: left\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\">While he was fiercely protective of his fellow soldiers, his disdain for the Iraqis living under occupation was palpable.\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"InternalLink decorated-link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.salon.com\/2013\/02\/07\/death_of_an_american_sniper\/\" style=\"color: #fb9d04;font-weight: bold;text-decoration: none\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">About them he would write in his book<\/a><span lang=\"EN-CA\">:\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-CA\">\u201cI couldn\u2019t give a flying f*** about the Iraqis. I hate the damn savages.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color: white;line-height: 21px\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif\"><br><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color: white\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><span style=\"line-height: 21px\">Kyle\u2019s comments about his actions in Iraq may be viewed by some as remarkably unreflective or simply repulsive, however, they are, in many ways, the natural by-product of the\u00a0dehumanizing\u00a0hatred and anger that accompanies war. It is difficult to judge the effects of\u00a0<\/span><\/span><a class=\"InternalLink decorated-link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.brite.edu\/programs.asp?BriteProgram=soulrepair_moral_injury\" style=\"color: #fb9d04;font-weight: bold;line-height: 21px;text-decoration: none\" target=\"_blank\">moral injury<\/a><span lang=\"EN-CA\" style=\"line-height: 21px\">\u00a0upon individuals who have lived for prolonged periods in an environment of daily carnage and bloodshed \u2013 a fact to which the recent video of a\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"InternalLink decorated-link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/middle-east\/syrian-civil-war-the-day-i-met-the-organ-eating-cannibal-rebel-abu-sakkars-fearsome-followers-8617828.html\" style=\"color: #fb9d04;font-weight: bold;line-height: 21px;text-decoration: none\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Syrian rebel cannibalising a government soldier<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 21px\">\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-CA\" style=\"line-height: 21px\">attests \u2013 and there is a good argument that the ultimate outrage over the atrocities committed in Iraq should lie with the politicians and military officials who helped engineer them.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div align=\"center\" style=\"background-color: white;line-height: 21px\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif\"><br><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div align=\"center\" style=\"background-color: white;line-height: 21px\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\">A\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"InternalLink decorated-link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/reporting\/2013\/06\/03\/130603fa_fact_schmidle\" style=\"color: #fb9d04;font-weight: bold;text-decoration: none\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">recent\u00a0<em>New Yorker<\/em>\u00a0profile,<\/a><span lang=\"EN-CA\">\u00a0however, revealed some details about Kyle that potentially make him more than a case study in the morally debasing nature of armed conflict. Of particular interest is the religious fervour which helped guide his actions in Iraq: \u201cLike many soldiers, Kyle was deeply religious and saw the Iraq War through that prism. He tattooed one of his arms with a red crusader\u2019s cross, wanting \u2018everyone to know I was a Christian\u2019.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color: white;line-height: 21px\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif\"><br><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color: white;line-height: 21px\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif\">Kyle was not alone in seeing the Iraq War through such a religious prism.
